My Overdue 2009 SERG Review
« on: June 15, 2010, 11:39:39 AM »

Ok, been on the forum for a few months, but since I recently got my SERG, I haven't posted my impressions, so here is my story, with a bit of my background:
I've been riding for 23 years, and have owned a Honda XL350, Yamaha Virago, Ninja 1000, Ninja ZX9, and my last bike, a 2004 Yamaha Road Star Warrior. I bought the Warrior brand new, and really loved that bike. That bike is the exception to the Japanese bike stigma, and now having owned my first HD, I still say that the Warrior has all the rumble and character of a HD, but is completely unique and uncommon. I don't regret selling it as my needs changed, but if it was possible, I would have kept it as a second bike.
I first learned of internet forums in 2004, when doing searches on the two cruisers I was considering at the time- the Honda VTX 1800 and the Yamaha Warrior. I've been a member over at rswarrior.com ever since, and spent thousands on mods to that bike as a result (sound familiar? :P).....and as you'll see later, this wallet-draining influence has continued as a result of this forum, LOL. Having spent time on this forum, I will say this bunch reminds me a lot of the guys over at rswarrior.com- knowledgeable, helpful, and an overall bunch of good, mature guys without attitudes  :2vrolijk_21:.
So over the last two years, I felt that I wanted more of a touring bike, especially for the hard locking bags and the long range comfort only a touring platform can deliver. I considered modding out the Warrior into a Tourer, but while I could add bags/fairing/stereo, the 5 speed was a bit buzzy on the highway, and fuel range was too short.
At first, I was all set on a Street Glide. Like most, I loved the looks of it. I rented a 2008 SG (in 2008), and Rockys HD in London, Ontario was nice enough to loan me a 2008 RG for half a day, as they knew I was considering buying one. Yes, I didn't like the looks as much, but I did like the lighter steering, solid highway ride, and the view/roominess of the fairing from the rider seat (where we spend most our time, of course)

So, once the 2009's came out with all the improvements, I decided now was the time. At first, I was looking at the 2010 RGC, then considered the better $$$ deals to be had with a 2009 RG, but finally realized by the time I did a 103, etc, etc, etc, I'd have another 10 grand into it, so I might as well look for a used 2009 SERG, which I really liked the looks/performance/value of. I originally had my heart set of the silver, but the O/B eventually became my favourite.
I was planning on picking up a used 2009 SERG in the US (I'm Canadian, eh), but I found a decent deal from a good owner here in Canada (in Winnipeg, Manitoba- 1,300 miles away). So on March 30th this year, me and the GF flew up there and rode the 4 days back thru North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin (stopping at the HD museum, of course), then ferried it across Lake Michigan, through Michigan, to home.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the SERG, and find I like it more and more, as the miles rack up. Power wise, it feels about the same as the Warrior (which dyno'd at 80 hp/105 tq but only weighed 640 lbs wet), which is a little dissapointing, as I had higher expectations, since I was coming off a pretty quick bike. But, no complaints, since doing the x pipe and Fullsac map, she runs real smooth and cool. The handling is great- it hides it's weight well, and corners as good as I need.
I definitely like the way the HD shifts, and how smooth and solid it is on the highway, which is what I wanted. Of course, the storage, stereo, cruise, and ABS are also great bonuses.
Here is what's done to the bike so far : (oops, ran out of room again- continued in the next post)

Actually, it was originally a US bike- the guy I bought it from had his buddy in Ohio buy it for him new, then flipped it into his name, so it's in miles, and it doesn't have the extra brake light  :wink2:
