Help me decide on a SE!
« on: June 17, 2010, 03:18:33 PM »

Hi all,

I have been lurking here for a bit and I am completely obsessed with getting myself a CVO ASAP   :huepfenjump3:   but of course I want to get the best thing that I can get for what I can afford.

I have boiled it down to a few choices.  Heres what I have done so far.

I road a couple standard street glides then I went and checked out a salvage title 2008 SE Road King with reinharts.  That thing sounded great and ran great but the road was wet when I road it so I couldn't get it up to much speed and I had some concern as to whether or not it was bent a bit.  I could probably get it for about 13k or maybe even 11.5 k  and it would take about 2 k to get it cosmetically almost perfect but the headlight seemed to point to the right a bit and I am very leery of getting involved with it.  But now I was thoroughly hooked on the idea of having a Screamin Eagle!

So I went to a dealer that had a 2008 anniversary Road King just  like the salvage bike and it had two into one reinhart and a big cone shaped air cleaner and it was 26 k and I rode it and it was very weak compared to the salvage bike and didnt sound good either.  I had it up on the freeway and I suddenly realized I think I need a fairing!   :)

So now I am looking at Ultras and 04 and 05 SE electra glides.  So here is where I am at today...  I can get a 04 black and blue SEEG with 11000 mi , just reinharts very nice shape but no extras to speak of.  about 4 hour drive away.....he wants 18999 but will probably take less with some coaxing....then there is a 2005 cherry one with lots of extras including progressive shocks, samson pipes 15k mi and he wants 19k he is in Tennesee and I am in Ohio...

and then lastly I have a 2007 SE ultra classic in my neighborhood black with orange with only 800 mi that I could get for like around 25k.  It has some vance and hines somethings on it and it doesn;t sound good to me and I haven't ridden it yet (hes says I can ride it all I want after I buy it!!)  Of course I will ride it before I commit to it.  It looks like a new bike..  but I will have to get the quick release tour pak hardware.. new pipes tuned...It'll be a lot by the time i'm done....and the black and orange paint scheme seems just a little out of balance to me although it does look really cool.

I think the candy cherry one is the most stylistically perfect paint job  but red is not my favorite..  the black and blue are more my colors but it seems the paint layout is just a bit disjointed to me in pictures..

I can afford any of them but obviously spending a little less would be good and after reading here it seems many people thin the 04 and 05 bikes were the best hence the reason I have started looking at them....

What do you guys think?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks!

Dennis

Based on your options, I'd suggest offering the guy with the Cherry SEEG something less and then enjoy the ride back home on it.

I'd also say that a slavaged title bike is not even to be considered.

salvage title: Steer clear unless the discounted price makes up for the tremendous loss of value and the uncertainties.  Salvage cars are about 50% of what non-salvaged cars go for.  That is assuming the salvaged car has been fully restored.

Don't get hung up on the sound as that can be changed easily and with minimal expense.

Beware of the early 110 engines as many have had oil leak problems and fuel pump problems.

The CVO bikes are special and well worth your due diligence in finding the right one.  Good luck!

Thanks for the reply.  Only reason I considered the salvage bike for a minute was that sometimes they only have a bent tab and i could probably have a cosmetically just about perfect 2008 SERK for only 13 or 14... tempting but probably not wise.

But when you consider that I have seen a few go on ebay for as little as 20k  it is not such a great deal to have a salvage bike that you can hardly sell to anyone when you can have a clean one for a few grand more

One more thing, when it is said that the 04 and 05 bikes are the best, why is that the consensus?   what if you can get an 06 for the same price..  is that a better idea?  Are they pretty good too?  I know the 110 had some issues.. so I dont mind staying earlier but...choices, choices!  Things could be worse I guess!   :)

If your going to get the pre 09 frame, then I would stick to the 103" engine. Much more reliable than the 110's have been, and can be made to make really good power.
