Need suggestions for trip to Reno area.
« on: June 20, 2010, 12:32:41 PM »

I'm going to be in Reno the first week in August.  Plan on visiting Hot August Nights and riding down to Yosemite Park.  What other places should I consider visiting in the area?

Depending on your route, I would suggest staying in the mountains, or over to the coast, it can get pretty hot there that time of year.

You don't say where you're coming from, if you've been in the area before or how long you're going to be in the area.

But nearby, I'd suggest a ride up over Mt. Rose to the north shore of Lake Tahoe and go down the west side (Emerald Bay, etc.) of the lake to South Shore, then back over through Carson City, Silver City and Virginia City. :2vrolijk_21:

We're going to cover all of this area this coming weekend so watch for the ride report.

JCZ is dead on. Cant recommend Virginia City enough. The "Bucket of blood salon" and the death table are must sees. -Wolf.

The Bucket of Blood sounds good.  I'm coming down from the Seattle area.  Down 5 and across at Susanville.  Hopefully it won't be too hot.  I'm good up to about 95 degrees.  Anything above that and the moss on my back begins to boil.  Summer so far up here has been 65 and drizzle.  I've got one week for this trip.

Coming down I-5 I'd suggest turning off the freeway in Mt. Shasta onto Hwy. 89 South.  You'll go by Burney Falls (1/8th of a mile off the Hwy. and only a 25 yd. walk from the parking lot.....well worth it!)......see pics of it in the link I provide below.

Stay on Hwy. 89 South all the way through Mt. Lassen till it merges with Hwy. 36.  Stay on Hwy 36 through Chester and on over to Susanville and Hwy. 395 South.

Great roads all the way, great views, up high enough to stay out of the extreme heat and incredable views.  See our ride here......   http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=50136.0

Just returned from that area. While Lake Tahoe if beautiful, you may not choose to ride around it. Just see a part of it. It's 35 mph all the way and very congested.

Yea, just go down the west side (California) side of the lake, you don't need to go all the way around it.  The congested areas do get down to 35 but between all the curves and switch backs coupled with vehicles and sight seeing, you're not going to want to go much faster in those areas between Tahoe City and South Lake Tahoe.  And, if you do it early in the day, there's much less traffic. :2vrolijk_21:

Go up the Tioga Pass from the 395 to Yosemite and then through the Gold Rush Country to Sonora then Back over the Sonora Pass. We had a wet winter and the white water and waterfalls along the passes are spectacular. Stay at the Gunn Inn, pool side, in Sonora after visiting Yosemite if you get a chance its biker friendly and a nice town.  Doc
