2009 SEUC starting
« on: June 24, 2010, 11:15:42 AM »

I have a 2009 SEUC with pipes and the HD race tuner. About one out of every 10-15 times it does not start on the first try. How do I fix it? Due to another problem I have a new clutch, starter and clutch bearing.

Not enough data.  Starter won't engage?  Engages then disengages?  Starter engages and turns engine but engine won't fire?  Or a lot of other options?  What's it doing?

My new to me 2006 SEUC is running into hard start issues too.

It's got the FCC9 Cams, PCIII with Freedome Tune, True Duals, etc.  Takes 3 to 5 seconds, of a very choppy start, and sometimes backfires.  I checked the tune and found that instead of having a Harley firmware, it's based on Metric Fuel. I'm not sure of the difference, but in trying to update the firmware, i found it was so old that I have to buy the PCProg to allow the update. It's got a good batter and the Heavy duty starter, so it's got to be fuel.  The current tune shows +5 at 500 rpm and zero throttle. And +6 at 750RPM Any ideas?

Starter works but bike will not fire off. I let off the starter and try again and it starts.

What happens if you keep the start depressed continually for say 5 seconds?  Are you waiting for the engine light to go off, and the fuel pump ends it's prime?

Does your version of the PCIII have the start fuel adjustment?  It may not, because I believe it was one of the updates like the Rev-Extend, but if it does, try adding a little fuel for starting.  This setting is different than just adding fuel at 500 and 750 rpm.  There is a setting for extra fuel %, and another for how many revolutions of the engine to apply the extra fuel.  You don't need many revolutions, no more than 10 would be my guess.  Experiment with the fuel %, I think I started at 5% and wound up at 2 or 3%.

Oh yeah, this is one of those settings you have to make with the PCIII plugged in to the computer and powered up (bike power or 9V battery).  Otherwise, when you just open a map in the software the Start Fuel option doesn't show up in the Tools menu.

Thanks Jerry,

Yes, the PCIII version I have is so old, it cannot be updated without this special $40 PCProg box thing. I'm told once I use it and upgrade the firmward to current, I won't need it anymore. Part of the benefit is, the new fireware allows the Rev-Extend and the Start Fuel features. I also think there is a difference between the Metric firmware and the Harley firmware, that might be causing some issues too.

So, I've saved the Map, and when the PCProg arrives, I'll update to the latest Harley firmware, and enable the new features and see how that works. I also found a copy of HD-Dudes tune he posted a while back with the same set up. He said back then that he ran into trouble with the Freedome tune, so he got a better one elsewhere. I'll try it at least.

That said, are you thinking I need more gas to eliminate the backfire?

Thanks man!

I have an 09 also and this just happened to me last week on a 5000 mile trip. The bike had become very sluggish on each start for over a week and all of a sudden it tried to start and everything went to a complete dead with no life. It was the positive battery terminal had come slightly loose but was still making contact. Tighten it up and starts right up every time.

Just throwing it out there!

ACR's are on. Could it be something they did when they installed the race tuner?

Had the same issue with my 09 SEUC until I got it back from the 10K service, now it starts on the first tap of the button.

My piece of crap bike is back as starting very hard some on the time and making a lot of noise.
It's going back to the dealer next week. It has a new starter, clutch and clutch bearing. When i took it home it was great for three weeks and now it's back. Any better place to take it other then the dealer. I live right by the Potomac river and the bay in VA. Is there a lemon law I can use. It's been like this for 18 months and 25,000 miles.

VA has a lemon law, but I don't know any particulars.  Contact the office of consumer affairs for details.

If you don't think your dealer is doing something right, by all means try another one.  Before you do, though, you might want to call H-D Customer Service and ask them to assist in getting your bike fixed properly.  The phone number is in your owner's manual.  You also might mention that you've heard that they have authorized upgrading the compensator for some customers with a similar problem.  I'm assuming your dealer hasn't mentioned that to you.  And I'm sure you've heard this before, but make certain the automatic compression releases are working properly.  If they aren't, any other repairs won't hold up for long.

With two choices of water nearby, it might be tempting to see if that Harley will float.  I suggest trying it in the deepest location possible, since you don't want the insurance company to be able to salvage it and give it back to you.

Jerry

Edit:  Here's some more reading material on the actual law in VA.  http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+59.1-207.9
