Empty??
« on: June 25, 2010, 06:43:02 AM »

While riding yesterday I noticed I was on "E" even though I should have had lots of gas left.  Stopped and filled up and I still had 1.25 gals. left.  Is there a way the dealer can adjust this so it's more accurate?

Mine is the same.  I just toggle the odometer button until I get to see "the fuel remaining".   The MOCO doesn't want us running out of gas.     ::)   There fuel gauge is like the air temp gauge and overly optimistic speedometer.

Come on, those gauges are the best that $1.95 can buy!

Yes, if you have a good dealership service department they could "tweak" the sending unit float rod in the tank to make it read more accurately at the bottom end of the range.  Unfortunately, most won't do anything but tell you "they all do that" or "that's normal", or they might try to replace either the gauge or the sending unit if they think H-D will honor the claim and pay them for it.  That might not make any difference, however, since this seems to be a widespread problem related to how H-D had the new sending units designed.  Be thankful, I guess, that you don't have the gauge from the days of the 5 gallon tank, when we ran out of gas while it still showed 1/4 full.

It's funny becuase my SE Deuce is right on the money proportionately throughout the entire range of full to empty. However, the SEUC is horrible. Stays at full until ~100 miles out which is really about 2.5 to 3 gallons burned, then it drops very quickly. When it says 1/4, it's sniffing fumes.  Seems all of them are very different.

I was just out riding and the gauge was showing 1/8 tank more or less when the fuel light came on. Stopped at the next gas station and put 4.8 gallons in so I guess mine is sort of accurate.

Still better than having to unscrew the cap on a peanut tank and try to peer down into the darkness as you roll down the road.  :o :drink: har.  spyder
