Help with heavy breather mod
« on: July 01, 2010, 10:29:20 AM »

I have searched and searched. I know some one had posted how they modified a heavy breather with hoses and external breather filter. Can anyone help me out with this? Thank you

I don't know if this is what you're thinking of, but, I'm using a "catch can" with filtered breather on my big motor.
Crankcase and heads are ganged together into this can.

Thanks HogMike.
Yes that is in line what I would like to do. Modify the HB back plate add a couple hoses and send them to a filter or catch can. I am curious to see how your backing plate is modified.

That can is on an old EVO
For your bike you'll have use some aftermarket backing plate on the FI unit, use head breather bolts with fittings to plumb into hoses.
The stock backing plate on your bike has a couple of little holes dumping into the TB area. I'm sure you can fabricate something up to get what you want. Just not sure why?
I"m running a "G" carb on that EVO. BTW

I did a little searching for you, and couldn't come up with anything on a catch can installation with a Heavy Breather.  Mind if I ask why you feel a need to do so?

I just would like what ever oil that does come out the breather bolts not to be going into the intake.
I ordered another backing plate and chrome plugs for my HB intake with plans to modify it.
Also waiting to hear back from Tim Doherty on a couple of products he offers.

I found the oil collector at J&P: http://www.jpcycles.com/search/search?Context=0&Ntt=engine+breather+oil+collector&Ntk=All&x=0&y=0
If you modify the breather bolts/spacers coming from the heads, drill and tap for hose fittings, you could use this can.
I don't know of anyone making a replacement kit to do what you want, but, it should not be too difficult.
All I know is that it works well on my EVO (carb), but, I don't really need it on the newer bikes.

Thank you for the link.
I have a couple designs in mind for this. Not much room around the backing plate to work with, so I may have to come out through the chrome plugs.. Doing all that and keeping it looking nice will be a challenge.
I just keeping asking myself why? Well it does keep the mind sharp and I hate crossword puzzles.

The HB backplate can be successfully modded for atmosphere venting.

Here's a different view. Hoses can be routed for a stealthy appearance.

I think that's what he's looking for.
I modified one of my bikes with the fittings/hoses pointing up, under the tank, along the backbone and then down the front downtube. With the lowers on, and black hose, and black frame, it's barely noticeable. I like that arrangement better than routing the hose down under the air cleaner.

You are correct (HOGMIKE) that is exactly what I have been looking for.
What size did you drill/tap?
Thank you Herko !
