I thought I had read somewhere they had switched back to a gear drive for the timing cam.

Anyone know?

never will.  Not with the wobbly cranks.  Acceptable runout is now over 12 thousandths (subject to increase)  gear drive requires almost zero.

Except maybe the starter when you are not using it
