Changing Mid-Range Cams: Andrews to Cranes
« on: July 03, 2010, 01:06:59 PM »

Have TW55 cams in my FXSTDi that has a factory SE-103" motor with no head work. I'm using Thunderheader 2:1 pipes, with a Zippers 50mm TB and air breather. The bike has decent mid-range power, but want to switch to a Crane 290-2 that has a .570 lift and 1800-5800 (compared to TW55's .550/2600-6200) rpm range Crane 290 open intake is 18, close intake is 42, with a 240-248 duration; compared to TW55 open int. of 22, close int.# of 46, and 248-252 duration. Would the Crane 290 cam make a noticeable difference in more torque? Crane advertises their 290-2 cam as comparable to the TW55, but suggests having a minimum of 9.5 compression ratio, compared to the 9.8 CR minimum reommended for the Andrews. Need to know if this cam switch is worthwhile, or just a waste of money. Thanks

8* less duration would be noticeable.

Dude,
Sounds like your looking for some cams to give you streeetable hp and torque and yes the cvo cams rule! You cannot beat the 25 degree intake valve closing of the stock 255 cams. Sorry!

The 04 SE Duece came stock with a CVO-253 cam. Intake close on that cam was 53 if I recall correctly. This bleeds off a bunch of compression. Based on the specs you gave comparing the Crane 290-2 and the Andrews 55 the Crane should have earlier torque and a bit higher Corrected compression due to the earlier intake close.

The 255 cam does build a lot of torque early but also falls very quickly after about 4500 RPM. It also only available for 06+ dyna's and all 07+ model bikes due to the larger inner cam bearing on these models.
