 >:( >:(

only one reason for pinging, timing is to far advanced that I know of.  Ot the bike is running very hot.  But not likely where you are.

Poor quality fuel, ignition timing, and/or lean mixture.  I notice you have a SE Race Tuner, but unless your map has been tweaked to run richer in closed loop mode, you probably still have a lean mixture at cruise and light throttle acceleration.  Try a different brand of premium fuel from a different station first, then if you still have a problem find a good tuner to do some diagnostics and create a custom map.  This assumes you actually have detonation problems, and not just some of the internal engine noises common to the 110.

Not as likely as other problems but easy and free to check so it's worth making sure you've not picked up a vacuum leak somewhere on or around the intake/tb.

Hi Cyril,

Not likely to be poor fuel quality, the gas we get in the UK is far better quality than what they get in the US!
Mind you we do pay 3 to 4 times what they pay!

I see you have changed the mufflers, if you did not change the Air filter for the SE or K+N then you probably
did not need to get the SE race tuner!

If you had the work done at your local HD dealer, then give it back them with the pinging and tell them to sort it!

Myself I went with the Thunder-max (ECU) with autotune, means no matter what I do to the engine (and I do a lot)
I will never need to change anything else than download new map andlet it autotune itself.

Don't forget to check for inlet leak, get bike up to normal temp, let idle and then spray some wd40 around the inlet
where it mates to the cylinderhead, and listen for any change in engine note, if there is a change then you have
a leak!

Good luck

Mark.

So the rental car that squatted on the side of the road on the A30 outside of Penzance I was driving hadn't really just got a load of watery fuel?  I knew all along it was just that the poor car really thought it was on the wrong side of the road and got so scared it had to stop and hide.

You're giving the Thundermax far too much credit.  Used as described it might allow the bike to run ok (and might not) but it won't truly dial things in for you.  Their map library is populated by some maps that have worked well and some that have not.

Even if it's a map that works well enough, however, the "autotune" really is not a tune.  It adjusts fuel; yes.  But fuel only.  Your timing curve is never touched by the system so is never dialed in for your bike.  Some of the Zippers supplied maps have curves that aren't optimal either.  Just in the small community here there have been several who have had severe detonation issues (to the point of damage) due to issue with the Thundermax.

It's a tool that can work well.  But we shouldn't accept it as a panacea to make the bikes run.  We still need to either dial it on on a dyno or be willing to spend some time with the laptop and riding the bike to incrementally dial in the timing curves to make sure it's where the bike needs to be.

Consider oil consumption
Oil in the fuel stream degrades octane rating and causes deposits that can cause either type of ping detonation or preignition.

In regards to the Thundermax. If you write the offsets 3 times 50 miles or more apart, to the ecm you will have created your own map. In the t-max control center click on details after your linked and monitor is lit. It will show you exactly where it has adjusted and exactly how much. If the base map you loaded is not a good choice you will see in the 30% adj block the % numbers. If you see any data in there the map you loaded was not a good choice. Anyway after the fuel does it's thing just send the map to James R at zippers and he will make timing changes and send it back to you. Also keep in mind the stroke of the crankshaft is the leading factor in basic timing compilations.I f you were to have a vacuum leak the TM will just keep increasing the fuel to compensate untill you say humm my mileage sucks. But you will not due any damage to your engine. Honestly, I don't work for Zippers, I'm from the west coast(left coast) and have spent thousands on Dyno time. What i do know is that your at the mercy of your tuner. Some good some bad. All i ever hear is: you got a rocket engine in that thing?

In back up to my first post . Obviously ambient temperature is a big player this week same fuel no adjustments NO pinging but the ambient temperature was 8/9 degrees c lower.

Sure glad my TTS removes timing based on temperature.
