In general, lots of good oils out there.  Hard to get unbiased info...too much manufacturers hype.

Don't mean to be argumentative but I'm not sure how you reached that conclusion. Redline ranked 27th out of 35 oils tested on the Total Base Number (TBN) chart shown on page 29 of the paper on the web-link AMSOIL was #2 out of 35. Mobil 1 (sold at WALMART) ranked 3rd and H-D SYN3 ranked 4th. If you read the entire survey, you'll see that TBN is the number you're really looking for in an oil. The author concluded that H-D SYN3 really was a good product based on that TBN and the fact that it is a good product for trans, primary and engine as advertised based on explanations given in the study for what the different needs for an oil are in the three areas used. Redline ranks high on the list in a couple of areas where you don't want high ranking in your primary or trans according to the survey. That's why the TBN is the number you want to concentrate on in chosing the product you use.

 The article also stated that there are flutuations in the quality of the Harley oils. That in itself is a major concern for me.
 
 Additionally, I wouldn't recommend running the same oil in all 3 holes.Amsoil in the motor and Redline makes "Shock Proof Heavy" for the tranny and "MTL" for the primary which I believe to be the best the way to run a bike. (Syn-3 in all three is not for me).

 Also if you do a search this topic has been discussed/debated many times here in the past and I agree with the consenus of the past threads. Amsoil & Redline products are the ticket.

As I stated, in opening my post, it was not my intent to engender an argument. However, I thought we were discussing the paper on this thread and not other threads and surveys. In reading the paper,  I would agree that Redline would be the best for the engine only. Since IMHO the thrust of the paper was to determine which products would work best for multi-use locations, I pointed out that Redline was not high on the list in that capacity. Again, IMHO if you read the paper. I believe you'll see that Redline is full of Moly which is considered (according to the paper ) as being very bad for your clutch. I use AMSOIL, but because Baker Trans recommends AMSOIL Extreme Duty 75/90 for the trans, I use 20/50 AMSOIL in the primary case and engine, so I am not running the same product in all three holes. However, my neighbor uses Mobil 1 because he can buy it at WALMART and because it works in all three holes. Another friend uses H-D SYN3 because the factory recommends it and he knows he can get it at any H-D dealer and it works in all three holes.

In the end, to give you your due from the charts and info in the paper , Redline in the engine, Spectro in the trans and Bel-Ray in the primary appears to be the best of all worlds. The question I would have regarding that combination would be how readily available are those three products in any given area.

The Venezuela government, run by dictator Chavez, is the sole owner of Citgo gas company. Sales of products at Citgo stations send money back to Chavez to help him in his vow to bring down our government.

Please decide that you will not be shopping at a Citgo station. Why should U.S. citizens who love freedom be financing a dictator who has vowed to take down our government?
