DEAD Battery......now what....
« on: July 11, 2010, 08:58:29 AM »

Just walked out and realized I left my ignition switch to my Ultra Classic on all night. The battery is DEAD.....

I hooked it up to the battery tender.....hopefully and hour or so will give me enough charge to start it. My concern is that the security light isn't even flashing. As this thing comes up, will the security or anything else need to be reset, or if I leave it on the tender for a couple of hours, will it be resurrected?

I believe yours too has a back-up battery in the security module and nothing will change, mine does. Your alarm can and will still go off if you disconnect the battery after the alarm is set. Been there and had to do that!

I also did that once, parked the bike up at a mountain carpark, hiked up to the top, stayed over night, got up early to go to work, left my friends up there and trekked down to the bike only to find i had left the ignition on......... DOH!
I had no mobile phone signal so i just pushed the bike out of the gravel parking and tried to bump start it on the downhill road, but to no avail, so i just continued to free wheel about 3miles down to the next village where after getting help from a local inhabitant, found somebody with jump leads. The bike fired up just fine with the jump leads from his car battery, I then just rode to work about 3/4 hour away and have never had any other battery problems, I never even put the bike battery on a charge, the onboard charging system was sufficient to reload the charge

Looked at the charging chart in the manual. Sitting on the battery tender would take too long. The battery would still be dead when I rolled the bike out of the way to get to the Christmas lights.....

Hooked it up to a 2/10/15 charger using the 2 amp mode and it seems to be coming back to life......at least the security key is flashing now.....

I guess if I had to make that mistake once with this bike, the best place to do it is in my own garage.

Sure is a lot of stuff in the way just to put a charge on that thing. Definetley need a black seat bolt that I can turn with my hand.

For once it's not 100 degrees here in the morning. I could be riding.........

LOL, I don't think it would take 'til Christmas, but it probably would take a couple days on a tender.  Left my ignition switch on after getting home from work one day.  Thing was already dead a couple hours later after dinner when I went to put it away.  Luckily, rain forecasted for the next few days, so on the tender it went.  Two (might have been three, now, can't remember) days later the light went to green.

Wonder if it would hurt to twist that charger up to 10 amps for a little while. The voltmeter on the charger is reading 7.4 on a 28 amp battery.

Think it would hurt turn the charger up to 10 amps for awhile? Manual says 5...

Well.....I was a good boy....and was waiting to have a beer until I finished installing my new Airwing Rack LED. Which I did. Unfortunately, sitting there having a couple of beers wiping her down and admiring my work, I somehow managed to walk away from the thing with the lights and radio on.

Frustrating....but I hooked her up to the charger and all is well......was just worried that I was going to have to dig and find someway to have the security system let anyone start the bike after a total power loss reset of somesort. But alas, it was as simple as giving it some juice.

Tour-pak premium hinges are next. But I am thinking about letting the dealer drill on my tour-pak.

I personally would NOT use a 10 amp charger on a bike battery. I would stick with the tender or maybe 2 amp in an emergency.
You may want to consider a ritual of always hooking up a battery tender when you park at night, it will help keep your battery at peak performance and help it last longer. The added benefit is it makes you think about the ignition and the battery so chances of leaving the ignition on is reduced.
Good luck with your mods too.

Agree with TRWTOW- Twolane's directions and step by step pictures made it simple-although I did need 4 beers! (actually it was 6) Be sure to not handle any power tools after beer 1 you can ask Twolane about that another time-heh heh sorry Don-slow pitch down the middle!

I dunno. Between leaving the bike on overnight, and driving off the other day with my fob on the ping-pong table (before I had read the part of the manual about disarming the security system with a code), I'm not feeling it. Besides......it looks like you have those hinges on backwards. Aren't they suppose to go inside the tour-pak??? :P

We'll see...hinges come in this week......

Those things look nice! I think they are a HUGE improvement over the stock hinges.....
