Looking for Advice about High Elevation Riding
« on: July 11, 2010, 10:29:23 PM »

My wife and I am heading out for Yellowstone and Glacier NP at end of July. We are trying to decide how to pack for the temperature variation. Any comments about what to pack or what not to pack would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Rode it last year at about the same time.  I took a (1) light jacket for early mornings and evenings.  Most days it was shirt sleeves during the day while in the Park.  I also took a (2) goose down jacket that folds up into a small pouch and (3) my rain suit.  I did not need the goose down until we hit the high elevations.

I live in colorado Springs and have traveled extensively throughout the mountain regions.  Yesterday I rode Trail Ridge Road and got alittle snow, grapple, hail and rain.  All in a days ride.  This time of year is pretty hot in that area but dont let that fool you.  Night time can drop into the 30's, you can experience very heavy rain with hail. The heat can get uncomfortable at times.  Carry some water with you.  My wife and I always carry
1.  Rain Suits
2.  At least 2 Sets of Gloves
3.  Thick  Long sleeve shirts for riding in the cool evenings and early mornings.
4.  Wind breaker / medium jacket.
5. Gator to keep the face and neck warm.

Hope this helps

get yourself some of those.

Had them on a 3 week trip through the alps, Italy and Greece. Were perfect no matter what temperature between 30 and 100 F. 100% waterproof and still give you protection nearly as good as leathers.

There is no completely safe time of year in that neck of the woods. I got stuck in a blinding white-out in the middle of hte day in the middle of JULY in Glacier NP. We had just got to the top of the pass and it rolled in out of nowhere. The visitor's center was closed, so we had no choice but to proceed down the mountain in the snow. One of my scariest moments on (or off) two wheels! Pack for extreme temps, watch the weather forecasts, and plan your daily rides so if there is any chance of precipitation, you don't push yourselves into high-elevation back country in the evenings where you might get stuck after dark in bad weather. It is a pain to have to pack for winter in the middle of summer... but it could save your ass, or at least make riding safe & comfortable!  Have a great trip... some amazing scenery up that way!!

Yea, I agree, also have water available, the dry climate and sun at high elevations will dehydrate you quick.  It rains quite often in the afternoon. Last week Trail Ridge was closed overnight because of snow!

I'm a fan of heated jacket liners. I always carry the heated jacket liner, long john pants, and wool soxs when I go overnight anywhere in the mountains. Rain gear over your leathers will go a long way to keeping you warm in rough weather. Just remember to put them on BEFORE you're really wet. I have never been wet and warm at the same time in over 35 years of riding.

Ditto, just returned from Yellowstone and Beartooth pass this weekend.  Yellowstone was warm, 60-70 degrees. Beartooth was cold at 10,000ft. I had to lay over a day in Livingston MT because they had 3-5" snow at the pass. The next day it was gone and the roads were dry by noon.  Lolo pass in Idaho (Hwy 12), I woke to a frozen motocycle cover after a rain the night before. I used a heated jacket liner and heated gloves. Best money I spent. Kept me warm as toast when I needed them and I didn't have to bring (pack) a sweatshirt. Just leather coat, heated liner, and t-shirt. Cuts down on the packing and I was never cold. Glacier is usally colder than Beartooth.

My wife and I got caught in a hail storm with another couple in Yellowstone a few years ago (maybe 2005) in the first week or two of August.  We pulled over and took some cover under an overhanging rock.  The hail came down so hard and fast that a few minutes later when we got back on the road, we had to ride in the car tire tracks as hail was piled two or three inched high in the areas where the cars were not traveling.  It would pay to be prepared with rain gear and clothing that you can layer on and/or off.

I'm heading for Yellowstone in a few weeks myself. Already going through the checklist for gear.
One thing I highly recommend from personal experience; Doc Baileys leather treatment. Great for waterproofing all black leather
Jackets, chaps and boots. I treat my gear a few days before leaving. It will smudge for a couple of days until completely dry, so
treating gloves is not recommended. Bring some waterproof gloves for sure. I rode 6 hours of torrential rain Utah with nothing but
my leathers for rain gear. Stayed 90% dry. The stuff is amazing. I will be packing a fullface helmet for this ride too.
6 hours of rain with the beanie helmet sucked!

Thanks for all the comments, I appreciate all the input. We are leaving on Friday the 23, and we have had another person join our group, unfortunately he won't be riding but will be a support vehicle, so we will have plenty of room to pack now. I can't wait to see all of the great things you've all ready seen.
Thanks Again, Supershooter
