volt gauge
« on: July 12, 2010, 02:59:42 AM »

Hey all...I have both engine and electrical lights coming on intermitantly...as well as speakers powering out intermittantly (which is remedied by flipping the speaker toggle switch from one position to another)...battery is new (gel...Odessy)..terminals are tight...so does this sound like a short...or do the "magnets"(behind the primary) or the stator fail outright...or fail slowly?

Also, right front speaker flutters as if it has a blown woofer...this is the harmon cardon upgraded speaker...I replaced it with a new one...and still the "flutter" as if it is blown...and then miraculously...it returns every so often to normal activity.

one last note...I noticed during extreme heat conditions (32-35 celcius days) that my volt gauge (which should traditionally sit at around 14) drops down to the mid point on the guage...and down to the first third of the gauge...from time to time...and that is when the engine and electrical lights come on.

does this sound like a short...and where to start?

thanks all!!

I had similar problems about 1 1/2 years ago.  Turned out that a battery cable was loose and caused the voltage regulator to fry (at least that's what Harley said).  Cost me about $600, including a new battery.  Don't know if that's your problem, but it's a place to start...

I'd take a voltage reading with the bike running and at about 2000, should be at 14.2 +VDC.  Have all accessories running.

ok...took a voltage reading of Stator output (disconnected the regulator...output from stator at 34 amps...operating range as per manual is between 30 and 46, so while this is at the low end, it is still within acceptable limits.

...engine and battery light still come on when gauge drops below 12...which it does from time to time...and then out of no where, it returns to 14.2.....does this sound like the regulator?

Also, speakers continue to cut out..and this seemingly has nothing to do with voltage going down, as per guage.

hmmmm!!

Sounds like a bad regulator.  At some low voltage point, digital electronics begin to crap out.  It sure sounds like the regulator or a large voltage draw is occurring, but I think there would be other symptoms beside the speakers.  I would try to solve the voltage drop problem first, then the radio if it still happens.

I have a regulator out of a 2001 FLHTCUI, it is used because the previous owner had a new regulator put on and it turned out to be the stator.  You can have it for the cost of shipping if it will work on your bike.
