Cam Tensioner Fail - How Much Is this One Gonna Cost?
« on: July 12, 2010, 03:43:08 AM »

Last night on my way home from a 1000 mile round trip, I think my tensioners failed.

I heard a knocking from the motor and lost all my oil pressure, so I'm assuming that's gonna be the issue.

Thing that ticks me was that I asked my guy to have a look at them last time it was in because there is just over 30k on the bike.

I guess I should have just replaced them then regardless.

This has been an issue with a number of the folks on the site, I was wondering if you can give me a ballpark idea of what it may cost... I'm going to assume that the oil pump is going to be toast as well.

in the worst - but quite probable - case it will cost you a new engine, sorry to say so.

What motor do you have?  It could be the oil pump failed. 110s had crank issues and this was the final symptom for many.

It's an 06 -103, it started back up after it got cool but there was no oil pressure... so I shut it down.

I'm going to start ripping it apart tonight.

HD makes a "disaster recovery kit" for this that includes a new cam. In my '02 FLHSEI, it cost $1500 parts and labor. I did get to keep the 203 cam as it was undamaged. Gave the kit cam to the tech for his rebuild project.

Sorry to hear the bad news. I had the same experience with my 2003 Fatboy which resulted in shipping the engine to Milwaulkee for a complete reman. last year at around 30k miles.
1st good news is that I keep the serial number and 100th Anniversary emplem on the engine.

2nd good news is that the engine gets completely upgraded with the latest designs such as the hydraulic shoes instead of spring tensioners and just about every other part that has been upraded from a design perspective since the year your engine was originally built.

1st bad news: all personally upgraded components in the engine get sh*tcanned in the reman process. That includes chrome bolts, upgraded heads and pistons, upgraded injectors and anything else not considered stock.

2nd bad news: costs about $3k for a reman 88ci http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/Engines/engine_remanuf_options.jsp?locale=en_US

3rd possible bad news: Not sure if they offer the reman program for the 103's

Yikes, sorry to hear that Murphy- at least you got home before she crapped out on you.

We discussed Indy shops before, and I found a good guy up my way, who specializes in engines and custom builds- let me know if you want to check him out, or if you're sticking to your guy. He's got a good rep, knows his stuff, and although he charges the same hourly labour rate as the dealers, he will quote/charge you much less labour time than the dealer.

Hopefully you don't have much down time, and get her up and going better than ever.

It may be the inner cam bearings hatched and took out the oil pump.  That happened quite a bit.  It that's the case you will have to make sure the engine is cleaned up good before you do any more work.  The tensioners may not have been the problem.  Check for large chunks of metal on your drain plug when you drain the oil.

Cheers, Moe

if the bearings give up, there is no "knocking" but the distinct crackling sounds of a little hailstorm when all those needles explode in the engine. Thats a very fatal event however, usually nothing in the oil circuit survives unharmed.

So... found out what the issue was, it's not the tensioners after all.

Inner cam bearing failed, some of the rollers fed down into the oil pump... and the pump seized onto the crankshaft.

Very little damage on the shaft, and the pins that were missing were ground up into nothing.

The tensioners looked OK, but I'm replacing them with gears regardless.

The filter and the pan are comming off, so we'll see if there is cause to go right down into the bottom end.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
