2004 SEEG Front Suspension Failure
« on: July 12, 2010, 12:27:30 PM »

Front end felt a little non-compliant after winter storage, so I changed fork oil to Belray 15w. Work performed at dealer. Upon further review, fork action is now almost non existent! Rode 2up yesterday and it was punishing to say the least! Even broke some parts- right passing lamp bulb broke off and was laying inside of lense, one of three rubber mounts for aux cooling fan broke off. Thats so far... The front end internals were changed in '06 to what was new and improved on the '06 Ultra(non CVO). What do I have here? Collapsed springs? There is almost zero shock action. Can this be an excuse for an upgrade?

Sounds like multiple failures-spring break and leaking-any oil leaks? Maybe a good time to look at the Traxxion solution.

Is this failure immediately after the dealer's service or some miles after?

If this was the way you got it back from the dealer (you said they did the oil change) I would suspect too much oil.  Not a lot that can go wrong (under most circumstances) within the forks.  If not too much oil, it could be something they did when changing the oil.  Lots of miles on HD FL forks with no issues.

Have to agree, most likely too much fork oil was installed

Yes Twolane, it was noticed within the first tank of gas after leaving the dealer. I provided the quart of Belray and they returned the unused oil to me. There is exactly 22 ounces missing from the quart. Got the bike back to the dealer late this afternoon. Stay tuned...  Oh yeah, no leaks noticed.

Ok, the dealer drained and measured the fork oil in each tube which was as spec at 11.3 oz. What he is telling me they did was refilled with slightly less oil (10. oz each side) and the rigid fork situation has been rectified. Not sure if it is fixed and will not have a chance to road test as I am leaving on a road trip in the morning on a different bike. I am looking for an excuse to install the Progressive Monotubes. Somebody please talk me down! We still have to return to the original problem...why was the fork not working well after 4 months of storage?

Update...the fork action has been corrected and all is good. Not sure why less than spec (10 oz vs 11.3oz) was the answer, but I have learned over the years that sometimes its better not to know. You guys that opined an overfill were correct, thank you.

Good news that it's fixed.  The difference in volumes described shouldn't have accounted for the conditions you described so it's likely the shop told you enough to pacify without really saying what they'd done wrong.  Most important thing is it's ok now and they got it taken care of though.  Did they cover the cost of the other broken bits or you eating that?

I've got a feeling that this is where the difference lies.  The stock damper rod style forks require 11.1 ounces, but the cartridge style forks only take 10.0 ounces.  And the cartridge style fluid level is very critical, as is spelled out in the shop manuals.  When the SEEG fork legs (damper rod style, both sides) were updated to the '06 cartridge style, it changed the fluid level requirement.

Good catch Jerry.  I'd only paid attention to the herty gerty description of the ride and not noticed the change to the cartridges.  Dealer should have caught that too.  They did screw up.

When TC and I went to Traxxion Dynamics to guinea pig their front ends mine got done one day and his the next.  Saw the guts from his 06 and it had little cartridge emulator valves in it.
