Anyone had there new 110 tore down?
« on: July 15, 2010, 10:13:50 AM »

Has anyone had there new 110 motor tore down from excessive noise/Piston Slap or clacking sounds at idle after the motor is hot? Has your dealer made good improvements from tearing into the motor to check clearances/tolerances and repairing those issues? I just took a 2500 mile trip and have 5800 miles on the new 110 motor and things are quieting down and the motor is running strong except when it gets hot at idle it makes this loud clacking noise that is not the primary and my dealer has offered to tear the motor down under warranty and check all tolerances and make it right. I guess I ask this question because I will be without BLUU for at least a month and that makes me sick inside.

You may have the only dealer in the country that doesn't say it's "normal".

I know you say it isn't in the primary, but I wonder how you know that?  Has anyone taken a mechanic's stethoscope and actually tried to track the noise down?  How about when it's making this noise at hot idle, if you pull in the clutch, any change in the noise?  In gear versus in neutral?

I'm not sure what kind of piston slap your dealer has had any experience with, but in my experience piston slap is worse when cold before the piston expands from the heat.  Maybe Harley has a new type of piston that shrinks when hot?  Nah, didn't think so.

One thing that happens when the engine is hot and at idle is that the oil pressure tends to be at it's lowest.  Low oil pressure and the lifter problems others have reported might lead one to think your dealer should be looking first at valve train issues before tearing the entire engine apart.  Once again, have they isolated where the noise is coming from, or are they just making wild guesses, or are they possibly just messing with you?  I've seen places tell a customer things like "we can tear the engine down completely and look around" when they have no intention of doing so.  The assumption is that a customer will never want an engine completely torn down by a dealership, and will quickly decide to just keep on driving it as is.  It's been an effective way to get rid of complaining customers in the past.  I have no idea if your place is one of those types or not, but when you stated in an earlier post that the "master mechanic" said he knew what it was but wouldn't tell you, and to just go ahead and ride it, I had visions of someone just trying to get someone out of their hair for a while.  And taking a month to do this "teardown and inspection", come on.  What's the plan, remove one part per day?

BTW, it would be exceedingly rare for H-D to approve a fishing expedition under warranty to just tear everything down and supposedly measure parts and verify fits.  They tend to only approve the minimum necessary to fix a verified problem.  So unless this dealership just has techs standing around with nothing to do, I can't help but be a little suspicious.  I realize I tend to be a cynic, but that cynicism has roots in almost 40 years experience dealing with auto and motorcycle dealerships as both a customer and a "factory guy".

Well I took BLUU in last Thursday and they tore down the motor on Friday and called me Friday night and told me that the Tech had found the crankshaft was out of tolerance and was below min clearance(To Tight). I believe Harley knows something about this issue and I was told by the GM that there are 4 dealers in PHX that have bikes in for the same problems as I had when I took it in. Today I hope to get some answers and understand more clearly what is truley going on and where we are headed. The service writer that called me Friday night first said Fly Wheel then said Crank and then said it is definetly a problem so today I want to hear exactly what is going on. I will let you all know. :nixweiss:

Maybe new motor is in order. Hope this works out good for you with minimal down time.

you.d be better off with a motor that they rebuilt correctly, either get the new flywheel trued and balanced and welded, and plugged or pay the difference, get the se/jims flywheel. have that welded and then you won't have this same trouble down the road. the mew motor is no different than your old one just newer. its a problem that only you spending some money is going to go away

In my opinion you would be better off sending off what you have/get back from Harley rather than purchasing the jims crank.  If you are going to spend the money get the S&S crank.

That is an issue you have to take up with your dealer.

Warranty, you have to find the comfort zone of your dealer or write a check.

technically they replace the crank with the same part. (most probably not care if you sent the new crank out to be trued, balanced and plugged)

But could be an issue with S&S crank.

The Jims Crank has been given the blessing of the MOCO to sell to it's customers.

My dealer charged me the difference between the stock crank and the Jims crank and I sent it out to Darkhorse.

It's worth asking the question anyway...  If the dealer goes along with installing an S&S crank under warranty, it would be worth spending the money to buy an S&S crank for the dealer to install...  IMO...

I wondered how many that replace their cranks and of those how many dealers allowed S&S cranks to be put back in and considered covered under warranty.

My dealer was pretty cooperative, but drew the line at the crank. They allowed me to trade for the Jims Crank. ( I tried to get S&S crank)

Money was not the main issue.

They were worried while still under warranty the S&S crank might be discovered and another shop on the road denying a warranty claim.

At that time the main issue of the problem was still yet unknown (cause).

The issue of the oil leak and a scissored crank are not always connected.

Being new to Harley I'm watching this thread with great interest. Mine gets a "rattle" at high temps and I have no idea if it's normal. It's just about due for it's 1000 so I'll be asking them to take a close look. To me it almost sounds like a valve float problem but I really have no idea. The engine just seems noisy (mechanical) to me. I don't notice anything at idle but my ear is un-trained. Watching and learing....... :nervous:

By the way what is a "jims" crank? Thanks!
