Engine: Third time charm???
« on: July 18, 2010, 03:56:38 PM »

Well, I've had an oil leak since this last motor was installed. This is the second 110 in the bike.   :soapbox:  Anyway, I thought I was just sloppy at changing oil etc... :-[ :-[  But, the oil was coming right through the casing!   :o

HD is going to send new halfs and then they'll pull my engine guts out and place in the new bottom cases. Not sure if that's a good thing, but apparently the only choice I have. The dealership has loaned me a nice 2010 Road Glide in the mean time so I guess I can't whine too badly. Anyway, they are taking care of it and that's a good thing. They are also going to find out why the the bike will not start after it get warmed up after a short ride. Kinda bad when ya got the HD flag ship and it wound start!  I do love the bike...I do love the bike . . . . .

Hi John,

Sorry to hear that your bike is having more problems.  :( It's aggravating when we spend that kind of dough and end up with the problems we've had with them. Good luck with the repairs!  8)

John, sorry to hear about your troubles.  It seems like mother Harley never does get her problems put to bed or her ducks all in a row.  Kinda like herding cats - a few still manage to get away.

I too had the problem with case porosity on my '99 ultra.  This was the first year of the twin cam and new cases, etc., which they blamed for the problem.  Took two years of off and on bitching before I got it resolved.  They tried to convince me that it was spillage from oil filter change even though they were changing the oil!

Haven't heard of any problems lately until yours.  Anyway, glad they are taking care of it for you.

John it looks like I am going to join you with my second motor on my 2010 SEUC. This really is an inconvience and it is going to kill Harley if they don't start getting things right the first time. Better Quality Control and less Greed!!

So is this second motor the first replacement of the original or the second replacement motor?  What kind of problems are you having?

Ultrafxr, The first replacement from original and I was have clacking/pinging every since I went over 1000 miles. They tore down the Eng this past Friday and found the flywheel out of tolerance.(ToTight)No Clearance. I'm waiting to hear from Harley today on what the verdict will be on the motor.

Just got a call from my dealer and a New Motor has been ordered. They are going through the tranny/Primary to make sure there is no FOD in there from all the excessive wear in the motor. The Moco doesn't want the dealer repairing motor because of all the excessive wear and metal FOD.

Well let's see i have not had the engine replaced yet but I just had a complete re-build and 3 other times I have had the jug's replaced top and bottom. What is the lemon law for? 4 years for engine repairs? Not happy. Hope I don't have any problems running to Sturgis this year.

as soon as a bike develops such sort of diseases I would get rid of it asap.

Learned that the hard way, my last FLHRCI consumed one 103 engine every year (mostly in June or May so I lost the nicest part of the season too) and the last time she did so was just out of warranty.

Should this sort of thing ever happen to me again the bike will be repaired and sold right away. No way I will be nursing a bike again.
