Electical Guru!! I need HELP with speaker buzz.
« on: July 19, 2010, 04:03:47 PM »

I have a 2000 SERG with a harley amp mounted under the tour pack.  This year I am getting a loud buzz through the speakers after I turn the ingition switch on.

Radio: Off
Run switch: Off (fuel pump not on)

Loud buzz frequency will slow down after about 20 seconds and stop.  If I start the bike and ride it I will have the buzz again.

Can't find a thing so I started to shake wires and tap on different components.  I found that if I tap on the starter solinoid the buzz will cut in and out.  Pulled the cap off of the relay and if I tap on the contacts the buzz will cut out.

Things I've tried so far.

1) Checked grounds
2) New battery
3) Replaced starter relay
4) Disconnected the amp and plugged the stock speaker wires into the speakers.  Still buzzes.

I don't know how it could be the voltage regulator when the bike isn't running.  Charges at 14volts when running.

What would cause the buzz in the speakers for 20 seconds or so and then stop when the bike is not running or the fuel pump is not on?

No, but how would that create noise in the speakers when the bike is not running?

Have you replaced the headlight with an HID unit?

No, but some of the HID ballasts have been known to cause similar to your symptoms.

Was just thinking if you did maybe something happened to the coil that could be causing the feedback in the electrical system.

I had the same problem when I installed the J&m 7 1/4 speakers, however mine only done it when I went thru the Zumo for music...
I talked to J&M after the fact and he suggested I check the ground connection to the amp...
Might give that a try...

I added another ground to the chassis of the amp and checked the existing ground but no dice.  Someone else on another forum said it sounded like the noise filiter in the amp went south and suggested adding a filter to each speaker.
