rear end noise when leaned over
« on: July 21, 2010, 10:07:07 PM »

My bike (09 SERG) is making a whining noise at the rear, but only when I'm leaned over.  It is much more obvious at higher speeds, and seems to be worse when I'm leaning to the left.  Has anyone else had a similar noise?  I'm thinking something's loose (wheel or sprocket) but figured I'd ask before I start digging in.
Thanks.

How many miles on the rear tire? My guess is the whine goes away when you put on fresh rubber. Mine did.

Sounds like the rear tire is cupped.

Sounds like the rear tire is cupped.

That would be my guess too.

Cupping adds a nice high pitched noise when you just lean over from vertical.  Of course the faster you're going the higher the pitch noise.

I wonder if anyone has ever shaved bike tires like they do car tires to true them up?  Maybe the tops of the cups could be shaved to get the tire back smooth without going too deep in the tread.

Just a thought...  And probably not a very good one at that.

4400 miles on the rear tire, and it's cupped pretty bad.  Thanks for the replies.  I read about this problem when the bike was new but had forgotten about it.

Check the front too! Many of us have gotten new sets of tires. Keep your tire pressure up.

Based on the title of the thread my guess is, we all have that problem.   ::)

My front tire just started whining last week.  Tread appears OK.  Tire has 18k miles on it.  I guess it's time for a new one.

I COMPLAINED ABOUT MY REAR TIRE CUPPING WHEN THEY REPLACED THE FRONT (warranty) BUT THE MoCo SAID THEY HAD NO REPORTS ON ANY REAR TIRE USSUES.  I TOLD THEM THEY HAD ONE NOW!

COUPLE MONTHS LATER WHEN I REPLACED THE REAR ON MY OWN, I TOLD THE DEALER/SERVICE DEPT TO KEEP THE TIRE TO USE AS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF CUPPING.  DEALER SAID THEY'D DO SO AND REPLACE UNDER WARRANTY RETROACTIVE IF MoCo EVER AKNOWLEDGES PROBLEM.......WAITING....

Wonder if it's a 'tire' issue or a rear shock/suspension issue that's causing the cupping?  :nixweiss: spyder

I had my front tire replace under warranty last year.  Went to my dealer last week to see if they would do the same for the rear tire.  It started about a month ago.  They said no go.  So I called HD customer service and they said same thing no go.  That I had to many miles on the tire 11,000.  They said anything between 8-15 thousand is considered "you got the use of the tire already".  Which in turn I said to the lady "in between, what if had 16,000".  Anyhow, she pretty much you have to buy on your dime.   Let's Roll

Lets_Roll, even though MoCo agreed with dealer, I would find another dealer if you can.  Have had several friends who had the same issue with between 8-11k miles and the dealer took care of them.

On the cupping issue, the quality control is the biggest problem with these tires IMO.  How can I get 12k with no cupping front or rear and others get less than 1k and cupping already?  I don't think it's the design, but the quality control at some point in manufacture.

The old D402 rear tires were usually good for around 9-11k miles, so if we were talking about a D402 maybe the idea that you had gotten what you paid for at 11k miles might have some merit.  Since the D407 is a higher priced dual compound tire that is heavily promoted as having a longer (higher mileage) life, however, the statement from H-D is just more of their BS that they use to avoid paying for their screwups.

Actually, the number of miles on the tire doesn't mean chit.  The warranty is based on the amount of tread remaining, not the number of miles on the tire.  If the tire has 9/32" of tread when new, and is considered totally used up at 1/32", then you have 8/32" of useable tread.  Let's say your tire now measures at 3/32".  That means that you still have 2/32" of useable tread, which is 25% of the total.  My interpretation of that would be that Dunflop or Harley should pick up 25% of the cost of a replacement tire, assuming the original is defective.  If anyone assumes that they should get 100% after using up 75% of the tire, they obviously aren't familiar with how tires or batteries are warranted.  BTW, if you go to the Dunflop website, you will note that there is no mileage guarantee on those tires.  You might find that type of guarantee on automotive tires, but I've never found it on motorcycle tires.

I'm not certain, sem_bunda, what going to another dealer would do for LETS_ROLL.  A dealer isn't going to give some guy who didn't buy the bike from him a free tire.  The selling dealer, the guy who made the big profit on the bike, would be the guy I would expect to step up and help his customer.  First by interceding with the MoCo on his behalf, then by kicking in some cash toward a new tire if the MoCo won't.
