2007 CVO Road King - The 'Wobble"
« on: July 27, 2010, 12:13:05 AM »

Hi All,

I have a 2007 CVO Road King, which through advice from knowledgeable members her, I have been upgrading.
With regards to handling, I have done the following:-
a) Baker +1 Kit, including the Bagger Brace :2vrolijk_21:
b) The Ricor inserts for the forks - Group Buy through this forum :2vrolijk_21:
c) Two new tyres and wheels balanced; :2vrolijk_21:They were scalloping
d) Tyre pressure checked;and
e) Full alignment and Fall Away checked.
I also have a Quadzilla fairing, fitted with a Klokwerks 6.5" Flare windshield.

I took the bike for a run this weekend and still have the unnerving wobble that starts at about 80mph.  At 100mph it is frightening and I will not go any faster, depite the engine pulling like a train.  Could the fairing be an issue?

Any ideas where to go from here?  Would changing the rear suspension help at all, or is the issue more fundamental........

Many thanks..........

Had the same problem on a 1800 wing. Changed out both fork bushings and problem went away.

Yes, it could be the fairing.  Takes a little time, but it would give you an answer to remove it and see if it cures the problem.

Colcop, was all that forementioned work on the bike done at the same time? If so, and the wobble started immediately after, you may have to re check each installed componet. If not, whatever was installed last is most likely the culprit. If the wobble started many miles after everything was installed then it could be a failure of any of those componits or  something entirely different. You also didn't mention if it's a small wobble just from the front end, a "tank slapping" handlebar wobble, or a pulsating and somewhat rhythmic wobble emanating throughout the whole bike. This would help narrow things down.  The Dog

Hi TrapperDog,

I had the Ricor inserts fitted first - and still had the wobble.  Then came the Baker +1 and Bagger Brace, still got the wobble.
I had a full alignment check and also fall away - all OK according to HD.

The wobble appears to be from the rear and feels like it is pivoted from the neck brace.  OK up to about 80, but as sonn as the speedo passes - even by a click or two the weave/wobble starts.

The bike has only done 7500 miles.  No highway here, so have to go into Malaysia to open it up - not very often though.. :(

Thanks for advice.

With only 7500m that kind of eliminates torn motor mounts and worn swingarm bearings and bushings. Have you checked to see if all your wheel weights from balancing are still in place? Neck bearings fully greased? Measured the fairing at various locals to be sure it's symmetrically mounted? Hopefull someone with more experience will chime in after all the hype on the new models settles down.

Check neck bearing grease (full it comes out bottom).

My '09 RG I had the fall away checked at one HD who said it was in spec and then at a second HD a couple weeks later who said it needed adjusted 3 clicks.

I had wobble at slow speeds and around curves. The fall away was adjusted and neck bearing greased by second HD. Also replaced the front tire as they said there was cupping probably causing slow wobble. Cupping probably caused by fall away not correct!?!?!?!?!?

Couple weeks later for my 10K I took it to Jim (hd-dude) @ Metal Dragon Harley Davidson Service and Repair at 22336 Meekland Ave in Hayward, CA (510) 885-9471. He said the Neck Bearing needed more grease as it wasn't full. I watched as his mechanic, Joe, filled it until the grease was coming out the bottom. Seems to ride smooth now unless I hit "Tar Snakes".

Can you safely lift rear of bike off ground and test for wobble at different speeds?
