R&R open house drags, 117" does a 10.03 1/4 mile
« on: July 28, 2010, 03:39:51 PM »

Was at the R&R V Twin Performance 15 year anniversary last Saturday. Hot as hell but a few guys did the trailer set up for the drag races. Other than the heat build up it looks like fun. One of the guys from R&R ran his bagger through it and ran 10.03 @125mph. He was speed shifting and doing a darn good job. I talked with him after trying to learn some of his shifting techniques but he looked at my bike and said FBW = no can do. I'm not sure if he was the fastest out there. A number of guys put there bikes through there, a couple of them were down right embarrassingly slow. I met Phil out there but I had to leave early. I talked with Marc from their shop to discuss a 117'' for my 08 SERK, then I remembered my finances. Hey a guy can dream can't he.

Those dyno drags do not account for wheel spin issues,(or wheelies, or bogging) or wind resistance in live application. :)

Scott,

Honestly I have no idea on how these work as far as accuracy is concerned as this was my first encounter with one. Your right about the wheelie issue as these are strapped down tight. When I watched the local dealership do their yearly drag races the problems the drivers encountered were wheelies, getting good traction and of course not going straight causing them to shut down. The good points seemed to be safety and accessability. The bad points seemed to be heat build up. It was interesting to see the techniques used.        Kind of like a chronograph to measure arrow speed from your bow, it may give you the speed but does nothing for accuracy. Bragging rights on speed are quickly lost when accuracy is concerned. You can make a bow shoot fast through a machine but it is usually not the one you would use for hunting. Good points Scott.

Yeah, they also take out the fear and common sense factor. Much easier to ride a bull when its tied down. But out on the open...different story all together. Can probably take a full second of the times there on some bike.
My bike makes the same or better power than that one and i dont think i would hit 10's on the track..

Ray,
What bow do you have?? I am jonesing to buy a new PSE, but daughter is in college now. The ol' Oneida Eagle Aero-Force 80(actually, nothing wrong with it, but those cantilever limbs need room to move, while up in the stand) will have to continue to harvest deer this year. What a sport!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We'll be in the trees soon, now.

Scott,

Just like my bikes I'm a traditionalist. I make my own recurves and longbows. I also make my own arrows, strings and just about anything else I can. Sharpen my own heads etc. I was hunting the PA, NY line many years ago when I saw my first Oneida Eagle, it was an early prototype and it really drew a crowd. Nothing wrong with and old bow, it still does the job. I keep things simple and effective. My son is worse than me, he shoots a bow he made from a hickory stave and shoots off his knuckles, no shelf or rest and he can really shoot, especially at moving & aerial targets. Actually he was setting up stands yesterday. I have about 80 to 100 old bows and over 1000 different old broadheads. When I was a kid I collected old arrowheads, who the hell knew some would be worth thousands. They are not worth thousands to me but people continue to pay the prices if it something they want. Like I want a nice running SERK with a 117''. I would like a 200" if it would fit. As the good book says learn to be content but I'm having a heck of a time with that one since I joined this site.

Hunting is like riding, if done in the right mindset there is nothing better.

Good luck this season

Scott,

PSE makes good bows, I'm shooting a Matthews DXT Solocam which I like a lot.. easy to tune. I've put my cameras out all ready, last year I did get a couple photos of the 8pt (190lbs) I harvested with the muzzle loader..and the 135lb doe with the DXT.

Bill

Good luck to you as well!!

Had pics last year of 3 good deer but they vaporized.
Did take some nice deer, and had a ton of fun doing so.
33 years now of chasing deer around in the beautiful rolling hills around here.

Scott, my 08 SERK was at the dealership yesterday for an increasing noise. Yeah I know they make noise but this is getting real loud and it's only a matter of time before she needs attention. It turned 35K miles and I ride it real hard. I will be calling you for advice once it needs open heart surgery. The dealer is going to cooperate but I will only go so far in that direction. I need a bullet proof motor that can take the punishment. When I get a chance I will tell you the complete story of why I gave up compounds and went back to the Longbow and Recurves. One of the reasons which happened while hunting in your home State of NY in Hoosick (spelling?) It was the last day of the season, freesing rain which made it easy for a clod like me to sneak up on a decent Buck bedded down. I got close, drew back and well as I said it was freesing rain. As I drew back the cables had no place to go so everything just came apart and I mean apart. I was really pissed off so I went back to Traditional and never looked back. I actually won the PSE male Bowhunter of the year way back in 1983! Got sponsored by PSE but felt like a prostitute way back then. I look at the magazine cover now and then just to see a much younger me.

It will always be the hunter not the equipment, but I admit you need to have more time to go the Traditional route and time is not always easy to come by! So use what works best and gives you the best chance for success.  I'm actually planning to take the season off unless MR. Bear keeps making an appearance in my yard and put my bow building shop back together, need money for HD's. I will send pics when I'm up and running. I like building bows its the customer service I dislike. But I'm sure you have to deal with the same BS.

Good Luck this season folks
