Where did the weight go?
« on: July 29, 2010, 10:56:31 PM »

The 09 SEUC running order weight is 924 lbs.
The 10 SEUC running order weight is 941.6 lbs.
The 11 SEUC running order weight is 933 lbs.

Two questions,  1) What was added to the 2010 to gain 17 lbs over the 2009?
                      2) What was deleted from the 2011 to lose 8 lbs. compared to the 2010?

I wonder because my 2009 SEUC is a heavy bike. (the heaviest bike I own)
I can't imagine it being heavier, but the 10 and 11's are.

I rode a friends 04 Electra Glide today.  I swear it is a couple inches lower and about 150 lbs. lighter.  And much less top heavy.  Seriously...does anyone know what an 04 Electra Glide weighed new?

I wonder what the Pleather tour pack weighs compared to the plastic tour pak...

If anyone has a brochure the info is there.
But I'm not sure what's listed in the earlier brochures but the 09, 10 and 11's have dry weight and running weights listed.
We are looking for wet (running) weight.

Just found an 04 Electra Glide spec sheet.  It says 776 lbs. but does not specify dry or wet weight.  Where is approx. 160 lbs.????

And it states the Electra Glide seat height is 27.3 - vs. 29.3 inches on my SEUC...

Riding his bike felt like riding Sheila's FXR4.  Not literally, but close to it...

OK, here's my theory.  Back in '05 most of the parts came from north America.  By 2009 many of the parts came from China.  Now, we all remember all those stories about lead in the toys and other products from China, right?  Obviously China has a severe over supply of lead, and they dump as much of it in their exported products as possible to get rid of it.  So I'd guess that at least some of the weight gain is from the lead in those Chinese parts.

When I sold my Leather tour pack if I remember right it weight over 40lbs packed to ship.  I am guessing that the TP itself weighted around 35lbs.  The fiberglass one can't weigh over 15 lbs, it is light

Yea, that's some heavy leather Bill.  Good thing you didn't have to send the whips and chains with it. :huepfenlol2:

All kidding aside...I have a knee that is basically mush and needs to be replaced.  Riding my bike vs. riding my friends ElectraGlide was night and day easier on my knee in town.  Way lighter and way lower makes my knee much happier!!

I love my bike for trips and cross country riding - but it sucks around town - I'm waiting for the day my knee buckles at a stoplight and I drop it.  So, I'm considering adding a bike to the stable...something lighter and lower.  Maybe a Street Glide or Electra Glide - an 05 or 06 perhaps...

Really does make a surprising difference Scott.  The SEEGs just felt like they had a lower CG than other touring models.  "Felt" more so than the numbers ever really suggested.

My 05 SEEG almost never has a tour pak on it anymore.  Just a pair of Corbin backrests on either saddle.  The tan summer saddle sits a bit lower than the black winter saddle.  But both sit lower than did the stock saddle.

So on some days it's that bike versus the old standard height SERG.  The SERG almost always wears its King Tour Pak with the big heavy Corbin backrest.  The seat on that bike also sits a little higher than did the stock SERG seat.

Obviously there are differences between the bikes.  But really they're still pretty similar machines.  Same frames, wheel heights, etc.  Yet it's a night and day difference between the two.  The SERG is peppy (enough).  It pulls just fine.  It will lean far enough to scrape if you're not paying enough attention (or even if you are sometimes).  It's tight, straight and handles well for what it is.  But it's still not a boulevard cruiser.  And something like a good boulevard cruiser or even just a bit better is what the old SEEG feels like.  It's fun to have both as they've evolved/devolved to somewhat different uses.  Both can and still do go all day, all weekend or across a country and do so admirably.  But they do it with markedly different feels.

Interestingly,
Here's the same info on a 2010 FLHXSE
"Running Order" Weight: 848 lbs.
Dry Weight: 805 lbs.
Wheelbase: 63.5"
Seat Height 26.5" laden / 27.9" unladen
Rake 26 / Trail 6.69"
Tire Size:
Front    130/70B18 63H
Rear    180/55B18 80H
ABS Brakes
6 Gallon Fuel Tank
35mpg Interstate / 40mpg scenic 2-lane

Not as much difference as you might suspect...

The difference I was noticing is between the 2004 Electra Glide standard (not the SEEG) which was 776 lbs. and my SEUC at 933 lbs.  And more than just the weight difference, the 2004 Standard had a noticable lower center of gravity also...   :2vrolijk_21:

Some of the weight saving on the new 2011 bikes will be from the new HDLAN wiring loom (low amperage cables)
