Bent Crank , New Motor
« on: July 31, 2010, 09:40:59 AM »

You would think that for the money  people spend on these CVO`s Harley would spend Just a little time truing the cranks on a SE Motor. I though these things were special.
Just checked a new motor with 1000 miles on it .   .0045 run out.  What a shame. :beatdeadhorse:

Just needed on the soap box a minute. :soapbox:

The problem is that NONE should be like that.  This is the single most important component in the drive train, and it should be 100% right 100% of the time.  Cheap bastards in Milwaukee need to find other ways to squeeze pennies besides cheapening the engines.

As best I can tell, what David found has become the "New Normal" for H-D crankshafts.  For many, many years normal was a crank runout of .001" or less, and the maximum wear allowance was .003".  Now the maximum is .012" according to the latest BS from H-D, and .004" brand new is not unusual.  I'll guarantee you that .004" - .012" pinion shaft runout will rapidly wear the oil pump and the cam plate.  They still seem to be counting on the fact that most Harley riders don't put very many miles on their bikes, so they can get really cheap on the important stuff and still make it through the warranty period without costing them too much for repairs.  Have you ever wondered why H-D doesn't warrant their bikes as long as companies like Honda do?  I think I just gave you the answer.

8k over a 5 year period is the average. With an average like that why would the MOCO care if 5% of their motors go south. The bottom line is profit....and since we still continue to give and give to the MOCO...why would they chang

Just a little effort on Harley`s part in building the foundation of a vtwin would eliminate a tremendous amount of engine problems.
They  don't want to put forth the effort. Never have since the AMF days.

Hey, I got a great paint job and a lot of chrome for $35000.00

This should still be good after the rest of the engine is worn out.

When the pinion shaft is running on it's own C/L after it slips, then the pump and cam plate take a whippin', as the photo shows.
.012" TIR is not acceptable. That only .003" shy of a 1/64", and that is what woodworkers use!!
