You can purchase a warranty up until the factory 2 year warranty expires.

I believe that you can also get a discount on the warranty at Tri County Harley...ask for Jenny.  Someone else will probably chime in to give you the exacts on the warranty pricing...and I don't think it matters what state you are in.  If you do some searches on here, you'll find lots of posts about buying the warranty.

If you complete your profile and identify what bike you own and where you're from, it will make it a lot easier to answer a lot of questions you may have later.  Welcome to the board.

Here's some pricing information:

These are the MSRPs for the different length warranties (HD calls these Extended Service Plans ESPs) the dealers have a printed sheet they will give you.

3 years $609; add $290 for wheel & tire coverage
4 years $814; add $290 w&t
5 years $999; add $290 w&t
6 years $1,204; add 365 w&t
7 years $1,494; add $365 w&t
Add $150 surcharge if purchased after more than 90 days from the in-service date or mileage is greater than 2000 miles.

The discounts off these prices can vary significantly but you shouldn't accept anything less than 20% off these prices. My dealer charged me $995 for the 5 yr coverage plus W&T which is a 30% discount.

I do wish folks would stop calling these things "warranties".  They are Extended Service Plans (service contracts), not warranties.  There is a huge difference.  And I believe you will find that the Harley ESP is run by an outside company and not H-D.

Does the group feel these extended warranties are needed? I have a 2009 SERG and the 2yr warranty runs out next year, do you all feel its worth spending this money for these warranties?

Do not expect to get a consistent answer on this question. I generally do not believe in them however I did get the 5 yr ESP through HD. I figured with my CVO there's enough electronics alone to go bad that the ESP is probably worth it. When you consider my SE Ultra has ABS brakes, Intercom, rear passenger radio/intercom controls, CB, XM radio, heated grips, heated seat, LED TP lighting, 2 power plugs, power locks on the TP & Saddlebags, not to mention the powertrain, I came to the conclusion that an extra grand could easily get "eaten up" if any one of this features had a hiccup over the next 5 years.

The ESP is to the advantage of the SELLER selling the plan.

If you feel unlucky - buy it

If you feel extra rich - buy it

Odds are set for them to make money ... Do you want to bet against yourself ? (your bike quality)

If it makes you sleep better - buy it

If you drive like a jerk beating on your bike - buy it

I sleep better with my $ in my pocket !

It's a luxury I prefer not to buy.

Sugarbear, there are many differences.  Some may say I'm splitting hairs, or it's all semantics, but I respectfully disagree.  There are legal differences, and it's not just semantics.  First and foremost, a warranty comes from the manufacturer at no additional charge and is regulated by Federal law.  A service contract is similar to an insurance policy, and the repair costs, overhead, sales commissions, and profit come from the "premiums" and the deductibles the customers pay. 

There really is something called an "extended warranty", but it is provided free of charge by the manufacturer in cases where they determine there is a higher than normal failure rate on a part and they voluntarily extend coverage beyond the stated warranty limits to improve customer satisfaction.  There even was a time when H-D did that, back in 1999-2000 when they found a high incidence of cam bearing failures in the new Twin Cam engines.  They extended the factory warranty on the cam bearings and sent a letter stating that to all those who purchased a bike built prior to their production "fix".  (Obviously that was under a different management group, the current group prefers to let you find and fix the problems yourself.)

Coverage under an ESP can vary greatly from the coverage under the factory warranty, but when people keep hearing that term "extended warranty" it tends to mislead many into thinking the coverage and their rights just continue as they were under the factory warranty.  Wrong.  I won't try to talk anyone out of buying a service contract on their Harley, even though for most products they are a losing proposition, strictly because Harley's quality and reliability has gotten so bad.  But I strongly suggest that they read the contract thoroughly before they buy, so they won't be surprised when the administrator refuses to pay for certain things, or even voids the contract and refunds your money if you get tripped up by one of the fine print exclusions.
