I went through this a couple of years ago with my '04 SEEG. Had a tune in it using 87 octane after doing a cam and pipe swap with a dealer 400 miles from home that was a little rich in the rear cylinder. Bike ran like a raped ape, just puffed smoke out of the left Rinehart both when rolling on the throttle and sometimes just when idling. Took it to the local dealer in hopes they could just lean out that one cylinder, but they insisted they needed to start completely over. Bike came back pinging, so I took it back at least 3, maybe 4 times and each time they took timing advance away thinking that would cure it, but it never ever did and I noticed a little less throttle response and general responsiveness each and every time. Bike would ping to beat the band in hot, humid weather even with 93 octane, plus 104 octane boost. Dealer blamed poor gas, as if anyone ever fills up at the same station each and every time.
So ... finally took it to another dealer 50 miles down the road who asked if I had a copy of the original map and volunteered that they'd be able to lean out the rear cylinder without me suggesting first, to which I said, "Yeah, I thought that should be possible." LOL Ran it down to the low fuel light and filled it with 87 before dropping it off. Bike's running like a champ now and I only ever use 87, even filled it with 85 on a trip this summer, just for grins. NO pinging whatsoever ...
