front tire change
« on: August 12, 2010, 04:09:29 PM »

  Hey all,

My questions is this, does the speed and odometer get their readings fromthe front wheel spin? and as I changed the front tire from the stock 18 inch to a 21 inch i was told that i will actually be going a bit faster than what the speedo says but how will that affect the odometer, will i be going farther than shown, by how much?   alot of questions but thanks,

Yes, the speedometer and odometer get their readings from the front wheel.

Take a look at these:

The speedometer/odometer doesn't care what the front tire is doing, it gets it's signal from a sensor mounted to the transmission.  If you change the final drive gear ratio, or the rolling diameter of the rear tire, it will affect your speedo.

Actually everyone could be right.  Depends on if it's an older or newer bike.  If it's the 2010 under your user name the speedo, radio AVC and s bit else is fed from a speedo sensor in the transmission.  You will have sensors in the front wheel.  They're for the ABS system.
