Question about Master and Caliper Rebuild kits (Rechrome)
« on: August 13, 2010, 05:36:26 PM »

I am looking at rechromed controls and calipers for a 2009 Road Glide. These don't come assembled, basically need a rebuild kit for the calipers and master cylinder. Has anybody done this? What about the eye glass on the side of the master cylinder? Anybody know of the part numbers to a new eye glass and rebuild kits? comments, suggestions?

Thanks,

Don't have the part numbers handy but the master cylinder is rebuildable.  One part number cover the site glass and o-ring, another number covers the complete plunger and spring assembly and a third part number covers the outer piston and dust seal.  It's all cheap and it's all easy to do.

The calipers are also easy to work on.  Easily rebuildable.  If you could buy parts for them.  You can't.
If someone is offering caliper cores without internals those cores  aren't heavy enough to be boat anchors and aren't light enough to be kites.  They're just junk.

If you can get complete cores they're easy to disassemble.  You could then get the bodies chromed and put them back together with the original internals.  But none of the internals are available separately.

Nice, well I guess I can disassemble mine, keep the parts to put in the new ones and hope they don't leak....... That sounds like a bad idea if I ever heard of one.....

Actually......  If you're careful with the disassembly it wouldn't worry me much.  The seals (quad seals, more robust than simple o-rings) are obvious as to their placement.  There's only one fluid passage from side to side on these.  It's got a seal of its own.  Only fits in one place and only goes in one way.

Bigger concern might be making sure you don't mark up the pistons getting them out.  While still hooked up to hydraulics but after they're off the rotors carefully pump the master cylinder.  Get the pistons extended as far as you can so you can grab them easily when you separate the halves.

So you'd already bought the chromed cores before checking if you could use them or not ::) ?

Wish I'd been that smart every time....

With a set of internals and a set of cores you should be in good shape.  Enjoy the chrome-i-ness.
