I've never heard of it before.  Our HMMWV gunners always rolled up their iso mats around the web sling and hunched down to get lower defilade within the vehicle.  We didn't have our HMMWV gunners expose themselves unless they were engaging anyway.  There was a higher chance of getting attacked by an IED than shooting a machine gun at someone.  The strap looks a lot more comfotable though.
