110 Motor gone bad
« on: August 16, 2010, 01:51:37 PM »

Picked up my 08 SEUC from 40 k service and rode 1300 miles to sturges. i developed a chirping bird noise that wouldnt go away. we all listened to it as it got worse. it sounded like it came from outside the motor like it was a heat shield rubbing or the rubber on the exhaust bracket squeeking. the noise got so bad i would shut it off at a red light because i was embarrased to be arriving with such a noisy bike. I went to the dealer in Sundance and he told me to put it on a U haul to get it home. turns out the brass bearings on the cam or crank went out, (the brass filings in the oil and loss of oil pressure were a dead giveaway). They claim the flywheel twisted or something like that. Anyone else experience simmilar issue?

Oh ya,

On my 07 CVO Road King rode the chirping till it died this was motor # 3. Back then the two piece fly wheels were not manufactured well and the install / tolerance measurement was changed for the worse. The motor Company had the damaged motor sent back to WI and I received a new crate motor with my vin numbers within 36 hours. I was back on the road in 83 hours.

Bruce, "scissored" flywheels is one term that's used to describe the crankshaft problem, try searching on the site using that term and "crank runout".  You'll find that there have been many crank failures since 2007, and while they got a little better after the fiasco in 2007, they still fail much too often.  H-D definitely has not fixed the root cause, and there has been no sign so far that they intend to do so anytime soon.

I sure have heard a lot of horror stories about these 110's.  Ol' Maudie might explode the next time I hit the button, but I haven't had to haul her home yet.  Or have I?  Hell, I can't remember.  :nixweiss:  Later--HUBBARD

I just got a 2007 CVO Road King from Eastside Harley. It has 2500 miles on it. I guess I'm glad I invested $1,199 into the three year warranty.

It is not just the 110s.  The 96s have the same crank I do believe - and they have had some failures also.

I have a 2009 SE Road Glide with 5800 miles on it. It's making a metallic churping sound in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear at 2800 to 29500 RPM. It sounds like its coming from the top of the front cylinder. I asked the dealer service manager about it Sunday and he said he had not heard of such a thing, and further added the 110s are "noisey anyway." Well, I ain't buy'n it. I've had 12 twin cams in 9 years. None of them made this sound. My current 06 SE Fat Boy and 08 103 Street Glide has never made this sound. Anyone hearing this sound on their 09 110?
