Suspension upgrade- back to stock height?
« on: August 16, 2010, 04:28:18 PM »

Well my 2010 Ultra SE was lowered when I bought it....I am 6'2 and probably don't really need it lowered. And I dont like that it seems to sit taller since the kick stand makes a lowered bike stand taller.

I am thinking I would like  to do suspension upgrades, so when I do it, that would be the time to raise it back up.

Since it has already been lowered, I am thinking the Ricors might not work since they would not raise the bike when installed, and I am not sure what else I would need to do to raise it. It has Harley lowering kit

Traxxion is too much effort since I cant take it there for install and taking the forks off is too intensive at this time and cuts too much into my short riding season...  and I dont want to spend that much right now.

So I was thinking Progressive Monotubes since I think i can easily make them the right height and 13 inch black progressive 440HD on rear.

What do you think about all this?   :)   :pepper:

Thanks

Dennis

PS it just occurred to me that I should have posted this in suspension forum.  Please move if I posted here in error.  Sorry!

I understand while reading some of the post on the other forums, about the mono tubes that progressive is having problems with them...

I have read a million posts as well.  There are a few reports that are negative and many positive ones. That makes it difficult to make a decision.  I like the sound of the Ricors, but I may have to put the bike back to stock height when I put those in, and I am not sure yet what that entails.

Not sure what problems Progressive is having with the Mono Tubes, havent read anything about that, and have had them on for a while and havent encountered any problems. Have a 2010 SEUC. If you really want to make it easy, and the jiffy stand is the only problem, because its sitting to upright on the stand. Harley does make a 1 in. shorter jiffy stand that will increase the lean angle on a lowered bike.

This is one report... read this thread

http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=49064.0

How do you like them overall?

That's a good idea about the stand, but I am thinking of upgrading suspension and that would be the time to go back to standard height if I wanted to.  More ground clearance, more shock/fork travel etc.

What did you do on rear?

Beak,
Any idea what the part number is for the shorter jiffy stand? My BSR and I have lowered our bike -after I dropped it on a slight side hill when new. Now it sits up too straight and I'm concerned about it falling over when on the jiffy stand and leaning uphill. When I first changed the suspension I thought I could just buy a jiffy stand like the one on my '07 FLHRSE3, but it turns out the '10 SEUC already uses that shorter jiffy stand.

My local dealer can't seem to find a shorter jiffy stand for my bike either. TIA for any help you can provide.

Havent installed it yet, Dealer called and said it was in on Sat. Will pick it up on Tues, and install.

Part # 631099 for the Lowered Kick stand  $79.99
Part # 50011-030A for the shorter Jiffy Stand spring.  $6.00
According to my parts guy you have to use a shorter spring. Dont know why.

With the Ricor's you'd have to go back to stock or aftermarket springs to raise the bike. The Ricors will add a little height to the front end because of their thickness, but not much, are a valve that controls the fluid passing through them, work pertty good too.

Turns out the part for the lower Jiffystand that Harley ordered was a Arlen Ness part. Its not that much lower than the stock harley jiffy stand. I should have just modified mine and saved the money to rechrome.

The part number for the kickstand was not a Harley part, as it turns out. Its an Arlen Ness aftermarket part. I did the install and on the 2010 SEUC that was 1 in lower, it didnt really make much of a difference. Oh.... about the shorter spring, ended up using the stock spring, didnt need the shorter spring after all. So much for my parts guy!!!!!

Had to take the lowering kit off my '08 Ultra cuase I kept bottoming out.  Tore up the wiring harness underneath as it was exactly centered on the tire also.  Ended up putting stock shocks back on.

As for the lowering of hte kickstand, I did not have the problem myself, but I think I recall a suggestion to put a washer or two uner the bottom kickstand bolt to push it out a bit.  Might see if that works. $0.50 investment.

Thanks for the update. Guess that's why my parts guys couldn't find it in the HD catalog.  :P

On the '09 and newer bikes the jiffy stand mount has been incorporated into the left side foot board mount -or vice versa.  ??? Either way, it would require tilting the entire bracket. Not sure if that would make the foot board sit at a funny angle, or if it would even be noticeable. Seems kinda strange that the MoCo goes out of their way to make all this stuff to get the bike to fit the rider, but they don't have a jiffy stand to go with their own lowered suspension components!!  :soapbox:

Maybe it's time that I stepped up to that TriGlide. Then I wouldn't have to worry about lowered suspensions and the jiffy stand. But then I'd probably ride away with the parking brake on!  ;D Guess it's always sumpin'... 8)
