Jerry, that comment reminds of a person we haven't heard from in quite some time.  Has anyone heard from Hoist?

It seems like no matter what he did with the '07 SERK he had issues.

I just haven't seen his postings lately and have been going back over old threads and there he is with his bits of wisdom for everyone.

I know what you mean Dan.  I think Howie could break a solid titanium bowling ball.  As far as I know, he doesn't hang on this site anymore, he and a couple other folks started their own site, cvo garage.

There was a time, admittedly a fairly narrow window, when you could at least do stage 2 or stage 3 mods and get acceptable reliability with a Harley.  Now it seems that good reliability isn't a given even if you leave the bike stock.  You spend your money and you take your chances, and as long as everyone understands that going in, fine with me.  Personally, I wouldn't go beyond stage 2 with a current Harley without doing other major upgrades.  My luck is typically bad; if Harley only built one POS all year I'd be the guy who got stuck with it.  Unless Howie got it first, of course. ;D

i would (sort of) disagree with ya.  this will be 3rd HD Big Inch project and all have been 100% reliable.  i have also had the same HD mechanic doing all the work i that i didn't want to and believe that a HUGE part of ther reliability. 

now, i don't beat my stuff into the dirt like some, i ride rather relaxed 90% of the time but like to smack down the wannabees on the softails and sportys when they get cocky.  8)

while i do agree with the MoCo weak links, i still think a lot of the reliability issues come down to the mechanic, the riders riding habits and the break-in process.

As mentioned by Don (Deweysheads), making big power without upgrading the bottom end will probably be a serious mistake.  The current Harley crankshaft is a weak link, and I wouldn't invest all that time and money on the top end without fixing the bottom end first.  And don't forget the primary components, the weak clutch, and the marginal trans. 

If you really want crotch rocket performance with reliability, I suggest you stick with one of the excellent products from Honda/Yamaha/Suzuki/etc.  On the other hand, if you don't mind breaking stuff all the time, then by all means go for the big numbers on your Harley.  Probably be a good idea to have a chase truck when you go for any long rides, however.  Like tennisman mentioned, it's a touring bike, not a racer.  Since you are fortunate enough to have a touring bike and a crotch rocket, it looks like you just need to decide in the morning if you prefer to cruise in comfort, or go out and burn up a tire, and then pick the appropriate bike to take.
