engine missing
« on: August 22, 2010, 09:35:14 PM »

Engine started missing today.  No real patern, running 70 on highway, engine began sputtering and missing, occaisional backfire.  Clears up after 15  or 20 seconds. Everythjing ok for 5 or 10 miles then starts up again.  Also, at stop light, a couple stimes, sounds as if it is shutting down back cyclinder but not running too hot to shut down.  It has done this all afternoon.  Not bad gas, to me it seems as if it is a timing issue.  What's your thoughts out there?  Could it be the stator plate loose? Thanks.

I'd start with the easy stuff first. Check the spark plugs, the plug wires, and check the Throttle body seals for leaks. Do you have dual exhaust? If so check with your hands at idle to see if one or both sides are backfiring. How many miles? If over or close to 25K have you replaced the fuel filter and internal lines?(probably not the answer but I thought I'd through it in there). Do you have an aftermarket fuel management system installed? I'm sure someone will chime in here with more thoughts but they'll want some more info.

Did your bike get the fuel filter recall for defective cracked housing a year or so ago?  Mine was doing the same thing back before the recall but new fuel filter cured the problem.

What he said.  We chased this same problem a couple years ago on a friend's '08 bike before it was common knowledge about the problem.

I had this same sort of problem with my 06 Ultra.  I put up with it for one whole season.  After about $1500 and 3 different HD shops changing fuel filters, plugs, wires, and numerous other so called fixes.  Finally I took it to a local shop and had the guy keep it and ride it back and forth to work.  Told him I didn't want it back till it was fixed.  He thought it was the fuel line in the tank the day I took it there but it turned out to be a air sensor in the fairing that was plugged.  It hasn't missed a beat since.

Not saying that this is your problem but something to check out.  It was very frustrating and like I say I put up with it for a long time expecting it to someday get worse and quit, but it never did.  Got sick of spending money on it with no fix.

Good Luck :cucumber:
