SERK3 Saddle Bag Question
« on: August 24, 2010, 02:54:43 PM »

I wondered if anyone with the stock leather saddlebags has done any customization to the bag tops?  I was thinking of having a leather guy dye or paint the flames to match the bike.  Mine is a 07 Black Ice, so pics would help. I have the hard bags too, but managed to scratch the hell out of the paint on our recent trip to the Gulf Coast.  The repair is going to be a winter project.  Thanks!

Once you get your bags fixed try saddle bag armour.  It may be a option for you.   I had it put on at Sturgis this year and really like it.  Here is a youtube link.

You may want to do a search on Goolge for Alligator Bob's Leather.  I'm pretty sure I saw photos of some of his leather work on this site. I have an 08 SERK with the Annie colors and don't like the small leather bags but don't care for the big price to have hard bags custom painted and the installation hardware required.  Either way it's going to take a sizeable amount of cash to get her done.

other then the latches and hinges on the hard bags,  there is no instalation hardware required.  they fit right on the stock mounts.

Thanks- I found a girl that is fairly local, and she specializes in painting leather.  I'll give her a shot this winter, after I get the hard bags and rear fender re-painted.

Would you mind keeping us updated as your project evolves, it sounds like it could be an economical and artistic solution to repairing & maintaining the soft bags.  I have an 08 SERK and I'm in the same situation you are in.  There are not many option for those with leather bags either you repair or replace.  The leather bags don't hold up well and the cost of covering them with exotic leather is not the way I want to go.  I have a set of white police hard bags on the bike now just to see if I would like the set up before I invest in having the bags painted.  So far I like the room from the hard bags but mot looking forward to sinking more money in the bags.  I'm hoping you find a solution that work out well.  It sure looks weird having the Annie colors with the big white hard bags.

Good Luck

I changed to the Hard Bags on my 07 SERK3, I like them much better than the Leather ones that came on the bike. I also added Fairing and King Tour Pak.

ad2, As you can see in my avatar i have the very same bike as you, I added the Faring and detachable King Tour Pak, was not real crazy about the T-P at first and the only reason i went with it was to give my BSR more support for her back, But i will say that its handy and have not removed it since installing it last spring.

My chosen option was to re-work, re-cover my FLHRSE4 bags and 2-up seat. Also did a matching 1-up seat all in hand-tooled leather and nile crocodile skins (bag set sides in croc with tooled leather lids). Work done by "Johnny" of Roberti Customs at www.roberticustoms.com

Unfortunately, due to a temporary change in the old employment status, the project (s) have been put on hold for now.  Will probably wait a bit to get things done, because I don't want to go the "cheap" route.
