Sturgis 2010 observations.
« on: August 25, 2010, 08:56:33 AM »

Had a very good time at sturgis this year. Here a a few things I observed.

1.  Lots of baggers and Ultras on trailers going to and from Sturgis.
2.  I did not see one CVO on a trailer.
3.  I was shocked at the number of CVO bikes at Sturgis.
4.  I counted 21 different 2009 CVO road glides in on day.
5.  CVO Ultras were everywhere.

It was nice to see that the CVO's are not trailer queens and are ridden.

It was shocking to see the number of Ultras on trailers.  One Iowa trailer with four Ultras, I mean come on that is not even a long ride.

That would make sense since it is the longest running model.

It's been this way for the past 10 or 12 years.  Saturday across Minnesota and South Dakota gradually became the I 90 trailer races.  The closer you got to Sturgis, the more you would see along the side of the road overheating or with transmissions leaking or with trailers needing wheel bearings.  I am particularily confused by the snowmobile trailers with their small diameter wheels hauling Baggers.   ???

I understand the guys towing their bikes if they are pulling with a motor home - cause that's their room for the week.  It's the ones who live close (less than 1,000 miles) towing baggers behind pickup trucks that I don't understand.  They are missing out on a great experience of the trip to Sturgis.

OK.............
You can all call me a "trailer queen", 'cause I pulled a trailer into Sturgis last year.

We had all our camping gear in it, and pulled it with my "old" '09 FLH

This was on the last leg of our "4-corners" tour.
We left the day before it really started, and saw a steady stream of BIKES on trailers heading in, nice of the drivers of the trucks/motorhomes/cars to give us the "wave"!
Some day when I get rich, I'll get me one of them "toy-haulers" to haul my fat butt around!

As of today, we're heading that direction again........hopefully all the "trailers" and their loads will be gone when we get there!!

You guys know, of course, this is JMHO, and all in good fun?!

Okay...here it for ''THE RIDE''    no trailers needed...

Rode out of Houston to Kansas City ...then onto Sturgis.

Sturgis to Cody,Wy,  Cody to Bear Tooth Pass, down through Yellowstone to the Grand Teton's to Jackson Hole.

Jackson Hole to Flaming Gorge, Idaho....cut down to Highway 40 in Colorado across the Rockies to Estis Park. South outta of Denver to Amarillo then back into Houston...and ready to do it all again next year.

Calgary to Logan's Pass (Highway to the Sun)
Onward to Helena for the night
Helena to Yellowstone
Yellowstone to Lovell for the night
Lovell to Spearfish
Tour around the Black Hills for three days and then back to Calgary

This year it was easy to pick out the ones that rode to Sturgis they were the ones with the sun and wind burn't faces.
My sun burn peeled three times it was a great trip plenty of sunshine  :2vrolijk_21:

I do understand a trailer being pulled by a motorhome or toyhaulers.

I just do not get Ultras on a trailer from less then 500 miles away.

To me, half if not more of the fun of Sturgis is the ride.  Heck after sturgis we went to Beartooth pass, Yellowstone, and Denver area before we rode back home.

Good point.

However at the hotel I was in, there were five CVO's staying there and not one came on a trailer, and there were lots of trailers in the parking lot.

Ummm...ok....  but if the motorhome was for sleeping, it will make for a long ride home each evening... ??? ::) :P

Not just Sturgis- the last time I rode to Myrtle Beach, I passed a couple of pickup trucks, pulling open trailers loaded with four Ultras, and the plates were from SC.  Go figure..... :nixweiss:  But, no one knows someone else's story.

I was riding east the weekend before Sturgis and the number of bikes on trailers was jsut amazing.....  at gas stations most of them would not even look at me and most of them were younger.... late 30s - 40s.  Owners, not riders.
