Wheel Weight alternative?
« on: March 06, 2006, 11:52:10 AM »

I had a wheel replaced under warranty- when I bought the bike it had no wheel weights on it. They apparently had to balance the new wheel. Is there no alternative to putting the wheel weight on the wheel in sight? It is anything but attractive and I've never noticed one on any custom Harley Pictures...

Good question tuned, I'm pretty sure the balance is not just for the wheel but the tyre too

So the tyre has to be on the wheel and the whole rotating assembly gets balanced as one.

This makes it kinda difficult to put a weight anywhere but on the rim although I agree they do look nasty

I picked up on this because I have just had my '05 SEEG front wheel replaced under warranty and when I collected it (loose wheel, not on the bike) I asked if it had been balanced and was assured it had.

tuned,

It's very rare to have a perfectly balanced wheel & tire without weights.  One thing that will help reduce the amount of weight required is to index the tire to the wheel.  This involves matching the heavy spot on the wheel to the light spot on the tire.

The weights H-D uses aren't very attractive, and they stick out like a sore thumb.  As mentioned above, there are chrome versions, some with a lower profile, that should look much better.
