fender hits lowers
« on: May 02, 2004, 03:42:50 PM »

Does anyone else have a problem with the front fender hitting the right lower on left turns? Mine has rubbed the clear almost off the fender before I cought the problem. I'm taking it to the dealer this week for service on the problem.......now I see chrome pealing off the wheels.....this hasn't been a good day [smiley=confused5.gif].

Bostonut, I saw you mentioned that in the peelin' chrome thread and thought that sounded weird, so I made a bee-line for the garage.  There's a good inch or inch and 1/4 clearance on both sides with the with the wheel turned to each lock.  That's with no one sitting on the bike which may make some difference, but I definitely don't have any paint coming off the fender or the lower.

Have you had the lower's off for any reason?  If it's a factory screw-up, I'm sure Hall's will take care of you.

Thanks for the welcome.....Hall's did have that lower off to replace the glove box ( snaps didn't snap ) and it rubs only when you turn left and compress the forks.

I think you answered your own question then.  Take it back to them and demand a new fender and lower.  Apparently, they did not have it in square when they tightened everything up.

I took the bike to the dealer today.....there is a problem with the design. When you hold the front brake and compress the forks with the wheel turned the fender hits the lowers on both sides, but hits worse on the right lower. My fender is screwed up after only 2000 k of riding. I suggest thateveryone try this on your bike so you don't screw up the paint on your bikes.....

Took a look at my bike per your suggestion. Had a slight bit of white material which rubbed away with my hand. Coouldn't tell if it was clearcoat or not. Just wondering how you compressed the forks so far with the wheel locked? Parking lot turnaround and hit a bump???? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Yeah, that's what I was wondering, but PCC spoke first.

The only thing I can think of is my wife and I rode from Daytona to Key west Florida durring "bike week". I guess having a passenger on the back added to the problem. I don't corner my bike at any dangerous degree......but going over bumps and road gutters seem to bottom it out on turns with a passenger.I weigh about 225 and the wife is 125 ...and the rear shocks are aired to 25 lbs.......I'm stumped on the design problem. The dealer is calling the factory tomorrow for some help....... [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

After talking to the guys at Reno HD yesterday, at first they were a bit skeptical, but after trying this out on a SEEG on their floor yesterday, they were asontinshed. In fact , Reno HD's owner may take delivery of that particular bike. They felt that if you were trying to turn around abruptly and had to stop short for any reason, the fender would hit. They weren't sure what to do about it, but John, the owner, up until last year was Director of Dealer Operations for the MoCo, so I expect some action. [smiley=6.gif]

Many of the HD drill teams have had the same problem with the Ultra's. When turning at low speed and applying the brake, the suspension colapses and rubs the fender against the lower fairing.

Haven't taken mine in yet, but when I need someting else done, I'll deal with it.

Let me know how you make out. It's definitely a HD design "oversight"

I took it in to the dealer yesterday. As of today they havent gotten back to me. As soon as the dealer calls I'll post what they say about the fender problem. All they did at the time was to look at the problem, shake their heads and say " that's weird "

Bostonut, let the Rep know your not the only one. and one dealer in miami, (Peterson's) is making a different bracket for the lowers that moves the fairing back 1/4" which solves the problem, I'm told.
The big problem of course is getting the paint right. A touch up even thought the area is tough to see should not be the answer. I would insist on new parts, or a repaint.

I Just looked at my bike and the fender IS hitting the lower on left turns! Last week the road crew for our HOG chapter went thru an advance riders course and we had to do a lot of slow full lock turns.  I think a bike should be able to do this without hitting...don't you? Well anyway, I'm off to the dealer about this. [smiley=furious.gif]
