wider front tire?
« on: August 28, 2010, 11:22:20 PM »

Looking for a new wheel and tire for a Night train. I realy dont like the 21 x 2.15 front tire. looks like a piza cutter to me would changing to a 21x 3 tire change any of the riding capability of the bike and do I need to change out the front wheel also for a 21 x 3. If so anyone know of a decent place for pricing to grab one at? I have been checking JP but all of theirs are well over 1k. Too much $ according to the wife....... :'(

21x2.15 and 21x3 is the wheel size... i'm guessing u mean u want to change the tire size??
u can put a 90/90x21 on the stock front wheel, it will look a little wider, and if u want a much wider tire, u can put on a 120/70x21, but for that u'll need a 3 or 3.5" wheel... u will probably also need a wider front fender also... my friend put a 120/70 on his wide glide and he needed a wider fender to fit over it...

On my 03 Sportster Custom I had the same issue.  I ride way too hard for the small contact patch of the 21" front tire.  I switched to a 19" front wheel.  Turns out the 19" & the 21" are the same overall height so they fit the same fender.  The 19" is just taller & wider than the 21".

I use to be able to feel the front wheel slip when leaned over pushing hard in the turns.  With the 19" that is all gone, it is as solid as a tire that small and a bike that light can probably be.  And I was still running the HD Dunlops, hadn't switched to Metzlers, that was my next step.  Seems like I will never wear out the Dunlops on the Sportster, they will wear forever at the 1k miles a year I now ride it.

I went +1 on my 21" FXDWG3 to a 90/90 , it made a big difference in the twisties.  I'd recommended it (Avon Venom)
