Pinging
« on: August 30, 2010, 05:29:49 PM »

Got a pinging when I accelerate heavily, noticeable in every gear.  It sounds like metal chips flying around inside the heads.  I've got Cobra slip-ons and SERT, still have stock headers and have done no engine mods; 2009 SERG with about 21k miles.  Shop can't get it to replicate but I think they're not getting on it heavy enough when they test ride.  Had the same issue some before my SERT was installed and they adjusted my AFR.  Pinging stopped but is back again.  Any ideas the cause, or has anyone else experienced this?  Headed to Milwaukee day after tomorrow and am not worried about it, but it is a nuisance.

I adjust my SERT 3 times per year Spring due to the change from winter temps / Summer due to the extreme heat / and winter due to the lack of 115 degree temps. I f you don't have the time for a SERT re tune try some octane boost that is safe for injectors

Thanks FLTRCVO.  My dealer cannot replicate the pinging, so am picking it up this afternoon and will tell them you've done that with success.  Curious - do you retune yourself or take it to a shop?

I am very lucky to live in an area that allows me access to multiple Dynos to tune my rides. I am also very lucky that the shops which I have access to Dyno tune my bikes have great techs.

Does your car or truck have to be "retuned" every few months as the weather changes?  Didn't think so, and your Harley shouldn't need it either if you get it tuned correctly the first time.  The trick is finding a real tuner, as opposed to the typical jackleg found in the typical dealership.  Good luck with that one.

Yes my diesel truck with a performance chip is tuned at irregular intervals, to date it has been re-tuned seven times since 03/31/10. Hopefully this answers the truck question. However, I do not see how this banter is assisting the member with the pinging problem. It is my hope your reading comprehension is some what adequate to understand what my response to the pinging inquiry actually was; if you don't have time for a SERT re-tune try some octane boost.
With regard to my re-tuning of my bike don't worry your pretty little head, I'm happy with my tuning ritual and I am happy with the performance of my bike and where I sit that is utopia. Have a Great Day

Well EXCUSE ME.  I guess if you really want to "tune" your truck every 3 weeks, and your Harley every 4 months, then I humbly beg your pardon for opening my (figurative) mouth.  And my reading comprehension is just fine, thank you very much.  Octane boost additives are not the answer, and they aren't needed if the tune is correct and the engine isn't carboned up.  If the tune is on the ragged edge, and you enjoy constantly playing with it, go have fun.  But for a normal person who just wants his bike to run decently under varying conditions I would suggest that a more conservative tune by a true professional will do the trick at a much lower investment in both time and money.

FLTRCVO, have not tried the octane boost but will be doing a Dyno soon more than likely.  Have debated changing the headers out (still have the cats), but to be honest, I have been pretty happy with the performance so far except for the pinging.  There is a shop about 2 hours from me that has a great reputation for Dyno-ing very well.  Have discovered after riding up to Milwaukee that pinging is generally only above 2700 RPM and only when I give more throttle above that RPM.  Interesting, and now the dealer should be able to replicate and I can make them retune my SERT to see if that helps before I dyno.

I know you know this however I must say it, make sure you take the SERT with you. I can't tell you how many riders have forgotten to take their SERT for the re-tune.

Yep.  It stays with the bike for just that reason.  Thx for the reminder though.
