Dunlop 407 question
« on: September 10, 2010, 09:23:04 PM »

Was the problem with the Dunlop 407's only front tires or will the dealer replace the rear as well. My front is a 408, but my rear is a 407 and I have a noise when leaning hard left from the rear of the bike. I checked belt tension and wear and it looks ok, so I'm thinking tire. If it is rear also, does anyone have a copy of the TSB because the dealer said he had not heard of any tire problems at all!!!

HD replaced front and rear on my SERG.  Both were badly cupped.

I was hoping for a TSB since the dealer doesn't know anything....

The bulletin I'm familiar with only talks about front tires.  See attached pdf.

If a tire is defective, there is no need to have a special bulletin.  There is a warranty with the tires, which you should have received a copy of at time of purchase, and if defective the tire should be covered as specified in the warranty document.  So if your rear tire is defective, and it's still under warranty, your dealer should handle it with H-D/Dunlop.  If they don't want to stick their neck out, tell them to call H-D and get a rep involved.

That's the bulletin I was thinking of...I will have to get them to ride it and listen to the noise I am hearing. Nothing visibly wrong with the tire, but I can't see anything else either.

Thanks for the help.

I think the noise you are hearing is just the nature of the beast, I have run the 407 & 408's both of them made the same noise in a lean. Get rid of them and put on a set of Metzler's, You will think you are on a entirley different bike.

By the way are you coming to MV ??  :2vrolijk_21:

I guess I will live with it for a little while....another few thousand miles and it will need tires anyway.

Had to back out of MV just yesterday...work ruined my fun again.....I was really looking forward to it after NRG :(  As MikeyT would say "No juice for me!"

I think the noise may be cupping.  Look away or close your eyes as you run your hand around the outside of the tire......to "feel" for cupping.  I had the same noise in the curves......the more I leaned the louder the noise was (I thought it was a wheel bearing).  As the tire wore more and more over the next couple thousand miles it got pretty loud.  Straight away was fine but the curves got scarry.  I still couldn't see any cupping but the dealer told me....look at the wall over there as you run your hand around the tire, you'll feel it.  And they replaced it under warranty.

But I'd be equally concerned about a dealership that isn't staying up on the factory memos and the fact that you have to produce it in order for them to give your complaint any real consideration.  If they have experienced techs in there, they should already know what to look for.

Didn't actually talk to a tech..just the service writer..but he should know too!!!!

I know what you mean.  I remember back in the day when we took our bike to the dealership we would talk to the tech directly that was doing the work.  And it was always the same tech that worked on my bike so there wasn't any finger pointing.

Now we have to deal with a "service writer" that knows less about bikes than the customer.  Awhile back I took my bike to a dealership and I had to explain the most basic things to the service writer......I couldn't believe it.  I called and asked for a meeting with the owner and GM. It happened about a week later.  Explained to them that I have a problem with not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling when I bring my bike in for service and have to explain the most basic information to the service writer......that I'm not comfortable with third hand information with what the problem was or what was done to correct it, or to stand and wait while the service writer continually goes back into the shop to get answers to my questions about the issue (knowing that the service writer doesn't even understand what I'm asking because he/she just doesn't know bikes well enough), etc. etc.  I continued to explain that is why I and many others are moving over to independant shops and away from dealerships.  To get that one on one relationship back and the first hand communication.  I told them that I was just sharing what many other of the old time "regulars" were saying out there but few are telling them to their faces.  Basically, they're chasing customers out the door.

If everybody would share this kind of communication with the management of their respective dealerships, we might see a tide turn. :nixweiss:

Lou, Greg can answer for himself.  And I don't remember what my milege was when I had my changed.  But FYI......there is a certain tire tred depth that's a minumum to replace under warranty for uneven or defective tread wear.  I don't remember what that depth is, but your dealership should be able to tell you.  I know that mine was down pretty low......maybe only 1/3 or 1/4 of tread life left when mine was replaced under warranty.  I hope this helps a bit. :2vrolijk_21:

Actually I'm curious about the rear tire. I had a 2009 FLHX with the 407F front replaced Free with over 17,000 miles on it.. Of course their gonna try and get out of any Free replacement.. I have had a noise in the rear tire when leaning Left or Right for awhile. Just never heard of anybody getting any replacements.. I have over 22,000 miles on my tires and can go more. Still safe.. Thanks for any information..
