Dunlop American Elite Tires
« on: September 13, 2010, 12:18:32 AM »

I was just looking through the 2010 Dunlop motorcycle tire  brochure and I noticed they have a replacement for 2009 and newer touring bikes called the  American Elite. (they also have one called Elite 3 I believe for Gold Wings). The American Elite  comes in sizes 130/80B17 and 180/65B16. Are any of you guys using these and if so what is your opinion compared to the original equipment?  I saw them priced at $120.95 for the front and $164.95 for the rear at Sport Tour LTD. (sporttour.com) 513-761-0936 / 866-761-0936 . This price was quoted as good until Aug 1 . I am still on my original tires at 7500 miles with no issues (09SEUC), but I a starting to consider my options when the times comes to get new rubber. Thanks in advance for your input. CAHDBIKER

I'm on my second set of Elite III's getting 13k on the first. The bike seems to handle better, the back tire I used is a 160 replacing the 130 which was shorter with a smaller profile. The higher load rating that the Elite III 160 had is what made me change as these back tires get awfull hot when fully loaded at expressway speeds on long trips.

When I need the tires changed I just go to the local Honda dealer finding they usually stock the size I need as they come on the wing.

Muddypaws, I just wanted to double check with you on something. The Elite 3 and the American Elite are different tires with different tread patterns, according to the 2010 Dunlop tire brochure. The American Elite is recommended for Harley Davidsons and the catalogue shows the exact sizes that the original equipment Dunlops come in. If you are running Elite 3 tires, what sizes are you using for the front and rear.(by the way nice bike I love the silve 09's) Thanks in advance. CAHDBIKER

Reo, exactly what spec 160 E3 are you running. I'd like to a bit wider, but I was suprised to see you could fit a 160.  Any issues?  What year and model bike?  Thanks

I run the "160/80B16" on my 04 seeg, can be found here http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/tirecatalog_tire.asp?id=86
Very tight on the plastic belt guard, may need to reshim the tire over to the right just a tad.

Looks like you may have a Fat Boy by your picture, I run a "GT502 150/80B16 Screamin Eagle Performance back tire" on my 05 sefb with absolutly no clearance issues or reshiming required.
can be found here http://www.latus-harley-davidson.com/Screamin-Eagle-Performance-Tire-GT502-150-80B16-16-Rear.htm

I think the GT502 Screamin Eagle tire is slightly wider then the Elite 3, They both look good, better than what came on either bike and both handle better in the rain. One other thing, the back tire on the sefb is a softer and may not offer the mileage durability that the original did, been on a couple years but I haven't been riding that bike as much lately so I cant give you a mileage report....

No, I've got a 2004 CVO Eagle Deuce in the avator pic, that I'm fine with the GT502 in a 180.

I was referring to my 2006 Screamin Eagle Ultra. I'm current running the E3 front and back, but in the factory spec which I think is 130 in the rear. I'm loving the though of bumping up that twiggy looking thing, but I'm not sure I want to resort to shimming?

This is mine after about 6k miles  :nixweiss:

Was the problem air pressure or balance ?

I'm not great at checking the tire pressure, but i've been starting to check it closer

MOFO, my new American Elite was deliverer from Sport Tour a couple of days ago. I will be mounting it soon. and will keep you posted on the condition/mileage. It is compatable with the Replacement Dunlop front according to Rob at Dunlop. I always keep the back at 40 lbs as per HD guidelines, and I check the tire pressure at least every 2 weeks and before I go for a ride. If anyone thinks that is too much or has better results at a different air pressure let me know. I normally ride with  a passenger and Luggage. Thanks. CAHDBIKER

MOFO, Simi HD quoted me  $78.00 so I will probably go there. I am only relacing the rear. The front was replaced in Great Falls Montana last month when I was on my way back from Canada. It was the original and it still looked pretty good when I left home, but  when I stopped for a break I took a look at it and it was totally cupped.(I had my HD tire gauge with me and had checked the pressure first week into trip so I am surprised I didn't notice it sooner) So I diverted my route east from Browning Montanan to the 15 Freeway and had a new one installed at 11,251 miles at Big Sky Harley. They have a great shop. Even the mechanics area is air conditioned. They cleaned all the bugs off my bike and refused a tip. The tire was free, but it cost about $65.00 to mount and balance.CAHDBIKER

Is that my problem ?, I need to get off the interstates and ride some back roads ?  I was wondering if i was over loaded? or should have had more air pressure  :nixweiss:

 I normally run 40/40 psi , frt/rear
