Regulator or Stator ????

My 02 cvo dyna is acting a fool runs great for a few hours then its dead need to know a easy way to check the regulator , also noticed an oily substance coming out where the wires exit the  regulator .   or do you think it is a bad stator.... ????

There will be a small amount of oil that runs through those wires, if there is even a tiny nick in any one of them it will leak the oil out.

Easiest way to tell if your stater is burned out is to open the primary inspection cover and take a sniff... if it stinks your stater most likely has burnt out.

Unplug the stator from the regulator and check for continuity across the legs. Should be close to zero resistance. Also check to ground on both legs. If either is grounded then the stator is bad. Next check the stator output. Stator should put out 16-20 volts AC per 1000 rpm. So at 3k you should get 50-60 vac. If this checks out then relplace the regulator
