Hi guys my wife rides a  08 Screaming Dyna in May the heads and one of the barrels had to be replaced due to paint flaking off,it also had its 5000 mls service. In June while touring Wales it started making noise like tappets knocking, on further inspection it was found that there was no oil on the dipstick. On returning to the dealership they topped it up and put it down to the new barrel and heads. In August we went on tour of Germany and my wife experienced  the same problem no oil on the dipstick, we topped it up with  with a litre of Syn 3 and rode the 300 mls home and on checking the dipstick yes on oil on the on it, the bike has done 8500 mls, 2500 since the problem has occured  and its had 2 litres of oil can anyone throw some light on this one for me
 many thanks Mr Rubble

Starting place.....if no smoke is seen, take a clean rag and wipe the inside of one exhaust and check for oil, could be blow-by. If you have stock exhaust it will be hard to tell which jug. Good luck,

Welcome aboard from Northern Virginia...agree with checking exhaust. If it isn't leaking, it is burning it. Could be bad rings, bad valve guides, etc.

If you are saying the bike has used 2 liters (2.1 quarts) of oil in 2500 miles since the heads and cylinder were replaced, and the engine didn't use oil prior to that work, then it would be highly likely that the oil consumption is due to something that was done during that previous repair work.  Perhaps the rings didn't seal in the new cylinder (plenty of the cylinders have been out of spec straight from Harley), or perhaps one or more of the valve stem seals in the new heads is defective.  It's impossible for us to say, but the dealer should be able to follow normal diagnostic routines to determine where the oil is going.  Be prepared for them to tell you that 2 liters in 2500 miles is normal, even though we all know it really isn't, especially if it didn't do this before they worked on the engine.  Good luck.
