Cold feet or good sense -CVO SG
« on: September 15, 2010, 12:46:25 PM »

Put a deposit on a 2011 CVO. Now I am starting to question my decision. My 08 SG is paid for. It has a 103 that frankly would put a whoopin on any CVO touring bikes. I know this because I own an 09 CVO Fat Bob. Probably would cover a CVO with a stage1 setup also. My 08 is 100% reliable. I just got back home (Va.) from Ca. where we spent 3 weeks riding. My bike averaged 43.8 MPG for the 3500 miles we did up and down the entire west coast loaded with tour pak and gear plus the wife. I take care of my stuff and even at 32,000 miles the 08 looks terrific. Got a few nice comments on the 08.
Now the new CVO SG is killer good looking but to put it in full touring mode I would have to add the following. Tour pak (my 08 tp won't fit) luggage rack, exhaust system, Master Tuner and dyno tuning time, a two up touring seat and a few other dodads that I can't think of right now. My price out the door for the bike is $34,177.27. When you add on the mentioned parts the total swells to price past $38,000.
I've had three bikes custom painted by a guy who also letters all my company vehicles (9) and it has offered a great deal on painting my 08 SG ($2700).
The 2011 CVO would not be a financial burden on me but honestly, $38,000 for a motorcycle simply sounds like too much and just not a wise decision. I have on the other hand put close to $30,000 in my 08 and I'm over $30,000 in my CVO Fat Bob. In the end I will probably buy the new CVO but I also like corvettes and I can buy a 2010 Vette for just a few thousand more than the CVO and I can get 0% financing.
This is all becoming confusing to me. Opinions or thoughts please.
 Gary
P.S. And there are some good deals on used CVO's I might add.

If your bike has everything you want already and the new CVO offers nothing better (in your opinion) then why pay for a new bike??? But, if you just simply "want it", then there will be no talking you out of it.

Gary,

If it's not a burden and you want it ... go for it ... since most of us don't need these at all it's a purely emotional decision (god knows I've tried to rationalize it ...:)).  If you're not sure you want it vs cold feet at the $ that's another story, since it is a big # no matter how affordable it is to us individually...

Your good sense is trying to over come your impulsivity.  I say Keep your current ride and paint it.  Put the money back for another different toy or a rainy day.  My 2 cents offered only because you asked.

Please don't take offense as none is intended.  Obviously I don't know if you act impulsively or not I am just assuming you are like me and I all too often act impulsively becasue I can.  I have often said I wish I had a buddy following me around just to say "do you really need that?" at the right time.   :)

Gary,

I had a similar decision to make on the same two bikes. I had a 08 street glide with about 15 grand in up grades that was paid off and was looking at the 11 cvo. The thing that made me pull the trigger was every thing that i was doing to my 08 the 11 already had. So i put a deposit on the 11 and shopped my 08 around to see what it was worth and the high was 17 grand even with all the stuff i did to it. So i stripped it down and sold it and got the 11. It made more since for me because i liked the new bike and i will never take a stock bike and put that much money in it again. I know every thing deprecates but if i every sell my cvo i know it will hold its value a little better. At the end of the day its whats best for you. I wish you luck on you decision  :2vrolijk_21:

Exactly right on both counts.

I'm definitely an impulse buyer. Had these bikes hit the market a little sooner I would already have bought one. The delay has given me time to wonder about the CVO.

Sold 2 over invested over chromed late model Harleys (both paid for) and added cash bought the SESG. No regrets an amaizing bike. Bring over the 08 we'll see if it keeps up  ;D I doubt it sincerely  ;)

Only you can decide its your wallet.

Not a single Boat, Sports car, Luxury car or watch I ever bought made sense financially? What the hell Go for it  :2vrolijk_21:

There are some used 2010 CVO's out there at least $6,000 cheaper then new and they have some mods done.

I sure like the black SESG2 but just now completed the finishing touches on my O/B SERG3...the thought of dumping similar mod cash on a new SE and the reality that in 11 months H-D will tempt me with another blinged up hussy gives me pause.

Just traded my FLHRSEI2 on 2011 SESG. By the time I got done it was around 40K. Wasn't sure until I put a few miles on her. Now I'm sure, no regrets. :pepper:

If you have to convince yourself you need it then obviously you don't. If you have to ask yourself is it worth it then its not, it's when you must have it no matter what the price or whether you need it or not, is when you should pull the trigger and get it. JM2C

It's been said above and should be clear by now.

It makes no sense to buy anything new, but when does that stop us?  Too many cars bought new and worth half or just over three or so years later to tell you.  But and it's a big one, there's nothing quite having something new, different or that makes your knob twitch.

Bikes at close to $40k make no sense at all to most when you can dump $10k with Honda or stay with the great bike you appear to own.

From what I know the new chassis alone will open-up your eyes and worth the extra.  The rest is down to you.

From my perspective, our bikes are more here in the UK at $40k without mods, I'm in for $10k worth of mods by the end of next month and for $50k I could have bought lots of chit that tickles my fancy.  No regrets here, not one.

Go for it :2vrolijk_21:
