2nd grade math homework assistance
« on: September 15, 2010, 04:55:32 PM »

Just got a call from my niece whom I usually help with her homework.  She read off a match problem neither she nor I can get our heads around:

Critical Thinking:  Explain how to make a ten to find 8 + 6

I've got no freaking idea and I'm not there to see more of the assignment.  This is read off verbatim though.  Any ideas?

10 from 8+6
Take 2 from the 6 leaves 4 add 4 + 8 = 12 subtract 2 from 12 = 10

This is a second grader's assignment and I still don't get it.  Two PhD engineers and an honest to god rocket scientist have also been called.  All banging head on wall...

I think it is that new math.

8+6 = 14 true.

but if you wanted to round up the 8 to a 10, you need to borrow 2 from the 6 which leaves 4.
Now you have
10 + 4 = 14 (is that what they meant?)

2nd grade math is all visual.....

to add you build columns of 10 and count the columns for the first number and singles for the second number

http://www.ixl.com/math/practice/grade-2-place-value-models-tens-and-ones

see if you pass this test

I would have to disagree.  To make ten from 14 you get 14 toothpicks and spell out the number ten.  3 sticks for the "T", 5 sticks for the "E" and six for the "N".  Thus fourteen makes ten.

I don't think any of us are right relative to what the assignment was looking for.  There was a written explanation that came home the next day.  From the text.  As the teacher didn't like the problem either and didn't grade it.

After having listened to the written explanation I know two things.  I still don't completely understand the solution.  Still can't explain it.  And nothing read above here matches the text's explanation.

Ok, that's three things.  But when a guy can't do second grade math what do you expect :huepfenlol2: !

I think Steve's got it. "Make a ten" probably means they're teaching them to do everything in terms of tens.
"Critical thinking" must mean *figure out how to solve the problem in a roundabout way instead of just solving the problem.* Hmmm... has my dealer been sending their mechanics to this school?!
