...best of all when you stood behind it  when it idled...our eyes burned

Stand behind the 01, 03 or 05 Greg and those memories will come back.
As far as the 09 110, it's to fragile (candyass) to handle the good stuff.
06 and earlier, "when HD motors were motors"

Hey Chip, for those of us that aren't motor-heads and don't understand the technical terms (ie:candyass) what has changed from 06 and earlier motors that would not allow your using racing gas?  :-\  spyder

At 20K the SEUC dropped a valve guide. (and parts started thrashing around)
Yes, it was repaired under warranty.
But I was told not to use that gas anymore in the 09.
It's now at 43K and running good (knock on 110 wood) so why chance it.
The 03 is at 52K and at least 40K has been on the good gas.
Probably 80% of the miles on the other bikes was on the good gas and they are fine.
Maybe a member here can give an explanation as to why I was told not to use the good stuff in my 110.
I usually keep 30 gallons of the good stuff in the Handy tank in the garage so it's not going away.

High octane "good stuff"  burns hotter (increased head temperatures) and has fewer lubricants (re:valve stuck in guide) than typical pump premium....

I think the valve guide problem had a lot more to do with a lousy valve to guide fit from H-D than the type of fuel.  Plenty of guide issues on other bikes running plain ol' legal pump gas.

OK I'll buy that, but with over 60K miles on the other bikes running that same gas I have to wonder about the 96/110 engines. I think quality or lack thereof or poor design/application of mating components of the 96/110 motors is a factor also.

Now see, there's the tech analyization that I just knew you had in ya.  I do think that the hotter-running gas could cause any of these motors to have problems, but not sure what the difference would be between the older and newer ones.  spyder

Bigger heavier valves, valve/valve guide fits in the 110's...... Higher octane fuel made a bad situation worse...  (JMO!!   :2vrolijk_21:)

So the use of the Cam ll 110 gas didn't necessarily cause the problem but might have been the last straw in a three way series of poor quality parts, poor assembly and good gas.
Is that assumption fairly close?

But to use the description 'good gas' might be confusing the situation, since too high a octane/burn rate/ or whatever might in this case be 'bad gas' for the intended use/motor.  Just like bigger is not always better, I guess hotter is not always better.  All I really know is that I'm not happy with the ethanol blend I'm getting at the pump these days.  >:(  aaaargh.  spyder
