To trade or not to trade....that is the question.
« on: September 17, 2010, 05:34:55 PM »

Have had CVO bikes in the past.  Went a different direction on my 06 SG.  Had a Jims 120 modified by T man to make 130/130 at rear wheel.  Fancied the bike up to the tune of 37K and change.  Great bike.  Carb bike so throttle response is unbelievable (a flat slide will do that for you!).  Then happened to stop by the local HD dealer and was semi smitten by blk/org 2011 CVO Street Glide.  So here is the question: the dealer wants $13500 to trade with my bike (both motors, both sets of wheels).  My bike has 8600 on the clock.  I also have a 2009 BMW GSA that I put on my big miles with so really don't need 3 bikes in the garage.  What do you think of the deal?  What would you do?  My bike is spotless.  Thanks in advance.  Spook

Buy the CVO. Put the 120" in that. Sell the 110 as a never used stock engine. Put the 96 back in the SG and sell that seperately.

Oops I mean the 88. Didn't see the year of the SG.

Don't think the Jims motor will fit the new frame or hook up to the computer, tank ect. as it is a carbed version of the motor. They are basically willing to give me 19K for my bike.  The t-man modified Jims motor cost 12,500 or so.  Not cheap to play at this level.  Thanks for the replies. Spook

Looks like they will give you 19K plus tax for the whole shooting match.....

Not a great deal, but if it gets what you want, go for it

If you decide to go for it maybe some one on the board would want to give you the cash.

That's why we call them "Stealers" not dealers. Unless you have a large note on your 37k bike, keep it.  :2vrolijk_21:

Sell the 06 yourself with the stock motor put back into it, sell the Jim's motor separately or keep it, and get your 2011. JMHO I would sell the BMW too, but thats me...

Thanks for the replies.  In reality the dealer is trying to turn about a 5-6 thousand dollar profit on the whole deal.  My bike is paid for and no loan would be necessary on the CVO.  Maybe it is because I just hate to take it in the shorts. Then on the other hand they have to deal with a 5 year old Street Glide, do the labor to take the big motor out, put the new one in, switch the denonator rims back to the origingal spokes sell them ect.  Will decide over the weekend and then either write a check or take a walk.  Thanks again for your input.  Spook.

Here is the obvious question that did not get asked.

You Have been riding a SG with a very big motor.

Can you learn to live with a stock 110?

And if you cannot, then start adding the costs associated with that change.

now we are approaching 13500.00 + another 10K - 13K.

So we may not be talking about $13500.00  , we may be talking about $23000.00 to $26000.00 ?

just speaking out loud......

I have thought about that.  The last 2 CVO bikes I had (03 and 05) I put $$$$ into the motors.  These were the 03 Road King (which I hated from the first mile and affectionately nick named it "Monkey Piss" because of the color) and a red CVO electra glide that I sold with 1300 miles on the clock.  Both these bikes as you are aware were 103 motors with crappy heads and low compression.  My built 95 inch Road King would leave these bikes in the dust.  That was then this is now.  I THINK I have mellowed a bit, hitting the big 60+ so hopefully would be satisfied with a 110 tuned and piped.  Don't those motors turn out about 95/95 to the rear wheel?  Just got off my HD, took it up the river on the fall "flood run" and damn that bike does like to run.  So there you have it.  Do like the idea of moving up to a new frame, ABS, love the paint, not so much the fuel injection unless the throttle response has improved since 05.  Thank you for the replies.  Spook.

Spook, having never ridden a bike as hot as your '06 hard for me to say and can't compare.  All I can say is that my '07 stock 110 with only SE air cleaner, D&Ds and SERT runs plenty strong for me.  I can ride two-up pulling my Bushtec and have plenty of oomph to pass cars on two lane roads without having to downshift.  It moves pretty quick as far as I am concerned - quick enough for me for sure.  I don't like to go really fast - 75 or maybe 80 is tops for me.  Things just start happening way to quickly above that.  Plus I like to enjoy the ride - not just looking for an adrenaline rush.

I too rarely find an opportunity to use the potential of my motor.  If I run it to red line through the gears I have buried the needle past 120 and it is still pulling hard in 5th.  I find myself shifting mostly around 4K or so at the most.  Dealer just called again.  $13500 to boot is the bottom line with bike, both motors and wheels.  Been reading the forums for 110 issues and possible performance.  I truely do not want to chase horsepower again and a pipe/tune is about as far as I want to go.  Would that give me 95/95 at the rear wheel???  Told dealer will make decision by Tuesday of next week.  Thanks for the insight.
