SERT install this week for my 2009 FLHTCUSE4
« on: September 22, 2010, 10:17:13 PM »

OK, let's hear the good the bad and the ugly. I want to add a SERT to my ride to fatten it up a bit as it pings like mad when I go up the hills and after the bike has been on the road for ours on end. I don't want it for Max power, I just want the pinging to lessen up and make it more enjoyable to ride cross country.
Am I heading in the right direction?

Thanks for any/all help and opinions  :2vrolijk_21:

Spend your money on TTS.  You won't be sorry.  SERT will make you sorry.  Been there.

Have to agree. The TTS will make your life easier than using the SESPT.

Had the race tuner installed and tuned after break in on both the '05 and '09. The difference was amazing. The '09 runs like a raped ape w/ no problems. Cooler, stronger running. Good money spent in my book.  :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks, I guess I should have known that there will be good and bad, and supporters and detractors, for almost everything you could add to a bike  ;D

Most important question is, do you have someone picked out to actually do the tuning?  The devices themselves don't do anything to fix your driveability problems, they just allow someone to make changes to the stock fuel and ignition maps.  I would personally rather eat my leg off than buy a SEST from Harley, but if that's what your tuner recommends then go for it.  The important part of that sentence is "what your tuner recommends".  It's just a tool, and the guy wielding the tool is more important than the actual tool.

The easiest way to look at any tuning device is just believe it is a box of tools. The tool itself doesn't make the bike run better but if you have the right tool to do the job then you get a better job done. Mastertune just has more tools in the tool box that allows the tuner to do a better job than anything else.

Well, it's in and running better than it ever has. The exhaust note changed and no more ping when I hit the throttle hard. Granted, it has been cool here now but, so far I am pleased with the add. The real test will be in a few weeks when I ride down to Tampa on it. Leaving Nov 2nd from Chicago  :mango:

yes you can re tune it as long as you have the tuning module.
I have used both. TTS Mastertune and SE race tuner. TTS is way more user friendly. race tuner is good as long as the tech uses the smart tune proccess, similar to the V-tune on TTS.
but, as others have said,

What LarryB said mainly. You get the module that allows them to plug into your ECU to change the map with the SERT. No software for you to load onto your computer so you can see/change anything yourself. Keeps the dealers happy and in money I guess.

You can buy the software CD separately if you want the software on your computer.  It used to be part of the package when the SERT first came out, then H-D thought better of that idea and made it a separate item.  Didn't cut the price of the SERT though.  And you'll need to buy the cables to connect the computer to the SERT/SEST and then to the ECM.  They also no longer come with the SERT/SEST.
