7 hrs is what my dealer quoted me and said that the whole tranny is quicker to install than the gear set.
Still think 7 hrs is a lot of time (I guess a whole lot of SMOKE BREAKS)..........

Yo Duke,,,,

I had the inner changed out on mine when I did the 6 speed install....I just dropped the bike off again after Daytona,,,it was dripping a half dollar size spot of oil everytime I parked it.  No doubt an inner primary leak.  Bribe your mechanic with his favorite beverage to make sure this doesnt happen...lolololol

My 2 cents:

I had the 6-speed gear set and a chrome inner primary installed before delivery. The gear set is AWSOME!

Thanks guys,

Real good information.  Other than the vibration issue I read and, I think that may be an installation issue, I ordered the gear set from my Harley dealer.  Lot's of other good info and advice.  Great site.

Thanks,
Norm

There's a fair saving to make by just getting the HD 6-speed gear set rather than the complete transmission - anybody done that? How long to fit the gear set versus the transmission?

Jim

I did the gear set and the mistake I made was installing that fine Fu**ing HD Auto Primary Chain tensioner. about 5000 miles on the install the lip that hold the big bearing in the trans case broke off and the gear set slid over and took the trans case and the gear set   The Indy that did the install is  a Baker Dealer and a top notch wrench.SO I KNOW the install was done correctly. I ended up installing the whole SE Six speed. STAY AWAY FROM THE HD AUTO CHAIN TENSIONER>>>  Either the gear set or full trans works great>>  I bought my full trans for $2200 for Jenny @ Charlie's HD so tht softened the blow a little>>> Greg

Guess I've been lucky. Had the gear set, chrome inner primary, and the HD auto tensioner installed at delivery, Feb 06, and with almost 18K miles all have worked perfect. Best shifting bike I've ever had. Has a little bit of noise in 4th ( straight cut ) gear, but with full face helmet and stereo I never hear it.  As a FYI note, from reading HD boards in general, it seems like the auto tensioners that were installed by the Dealers haven't had many problems, but those that did the install on thier own and MAYBE didn't read the instructions CAREFULLY, may have over tightened it.

LOL.  As I proofread my post, I realized that I just complimented HD dealers.  ;D  Guess there's a first time for everything. ::)

Glad to hear you have had such good luck with the gear set. Also, I thought I was the only one that had the whine in 4th gear (I can always tell when I'm in 4th....sound is distinctly different than any other).

I went with the complete tranny and sold the original 5-speed on eBay for $550.00.  I've been pleased with the results.

I had the local HD dealer do the gear install and the auto tensioner.  I rode about 450 miles this weekend and noticed a vibration in all gears.  The rpms dropped in sixth and the gas mileage improved but, this vibration is driving me crazy.
I'm about ready to get rid of this bike.

Thanks Greg,  I've been racking my brain for two days and I was thinking the same thing. The tensioner was too tight.  Yesterday I left the bike at the dealer and asked them to fix it.
Hopefully, he will realize the tensioner is the problem.  I'm not familiar with the HB hydraulic tensioner you mentioned.  Where can I find one?
Thanks again,
Norm

1.  GO with Baker 6-Speed - by far the BEST!
2.  If you can sell your HD tranny - get the whole new polished Baker 6-Speed as it looks as good as it runs!
3.  Run Redline HEAVY ShockProof Gear Oil!
