Tour Pack Vibration - A Real Question
« on: September 23, 2010, 12:34:36 PM »

Greetings,

OK, so my attempts at humor went over like the proverbial lead balloon and caused my question to be kicked to the curb.  I sincerely apologize to the Mods and or anyone I offended.

My question however was a serious one.  I have a 2009 S/E Roadglide with a chopped tour pack mounted with one of George's very fine mounts.  The tour pack is pushed back to the last mounting hole so as to provide more room for my BSR.  The tour pack vibrates enough that it is uncomfortable.  Even at rest there is a very significant buzz coming through the backrest pad.  I am looking for any ideas as to how to reduce the felt vibration.

Again I apologize to the Mods for trying to use humor to get more attention to my question.  I thought the other members would find it funny and that it would get my point across as to what the problem is.  I did not mean to offend. :-[

Is the tour pack detachable and vibrating thru the mounts/cheap bushings?  The problem is not George's mount.  The vibration has to be coming from/thru the bike.

Regarding the fun factor of this thread, boobs/bikes/vibrations-you should have known it was coming.

 :cherry:

Hope you get some insight so you can figure it out and have a happy BSR..

I took a 2010 Ultra ltd with the 103" for a ride and my wife had complained about vibrations from the tour pack. When I mentioned it to the dealer all he said was thats unusual  :nixweiss: typical dealers answer

thanks Boatman.  Yes it is the HD detachable mount.  No beef with George's mount.  It is almost like a piece of art in it's appearance.  I have noticed that the saddlebags vibrate but I just figured it was due to the fact that the mufflers, pipes and motor are attached.  The seat and rear fender don't vibrate at all.

Hey Hooligan,
Your dealer said something was unusual? My experience with the dealership is they always say" That's Normal". Just saying.....

smenard415, very sorry if I (we) got out of hand.  You have to admit... never mind.  Good luck with the issue.

The "pad" on the detached tour pak is hard as a rock. But it is mounted w/ a suspension system of sorts which includes isolators. Are you sure that the pad is mounted correctly to the t/pak lid? BTW, the rubber isolators have been known to break. If all is in order you might consider replacing the "padding" w/ a softer foam. IMHO you'll never match the cushioning ability of a the full size (wrap around) t/p pad vs. the small one. Good luck, if momma ain't happy then no one's happy.

You might look at the below link off of an '05. It's the same set up.

Thanks for the answers submitted.  Still lookin for a answer.  I will play around tomorrow with the mount and see what I can do.   I had too laugh at the mention of the backrest isolators.  More than once when I sold H-D parts I had customers tell me I was nuts (or worse) when I told them a three pack of those bastards was $35.

Are your pipes isolated from the frame? I've heard that can cause  vibration
