miles needed before dyno tune

how many miles do you think, should be on a new build, before a dyno tune, on a cvo 110, after new cam and heads are installed :2vrolijk_21:

I was told atleast 1000 miles, 1500 would be better. Same situation for me in that i recently had new cams, heads, rings, and rods done and now have 1400 miles on the bike. scheduled for the dyno tune on tues (1800 miles by then) and the dealer says thats plenty to have it done.

I rebuilt mine and took it straight to the dyno.  Did a quick breakin on the dyno then straight into the tuning.  Runs great.  I thought that was better than riding it with the map that was in it as it was way off and running really rich.

I went from 103 to 107 with new cams, heads, etc.

Just the way I did it.

Cheers, Moe

In a lot of ways "in the right hands" the dyno is a good place for the break-in.
That will include a lot of lower speed roll-ons without the brake and correcting lower speed VEs first so in short order, the common operating range, is fixed and the heat can be watched and naturally every download the bike is shut off and allowed to cool.  So heat cycles and load and unload of rings is done all with a close to correct AFR so that the motor won't get hurt. All of this is done before any WOT stuff, or at least that is my preferance.

No miles, do it on dyno with a few third gear roll-ons and then let it coast down. I break in new ones on the road the same way, 2 or 3 3rd gear 2000 to redline then ride it down. Whala, it is broke in. Be doing it this way, cars, bikes for over 40 years without a problem and I have had some hi-po stuff over the years. Never had a motor problem.

I think the key is "in the right hands"

Absolutely :2vrolijk_21:
That would include no WOT runs until the lower speed stuff was corrected without excessive heat. One over temp WOT run can microweld rings if the AFR, timing, and heat are not proper. The possibility of this diminishes when several non-brake roll-ons are done with cooling sessions in between.

Many astute tuners across the country, from California, to New York, all agree that the Dyno, is the place to monitor ambient air temps, intake temps, engine temp, fuel and timing requirements, on each individual cylinder, when settling in a fresh engine combination. ;)
